About The Position

The City of Independence's Parks & Recreation Department is looking for seasonal umpires to work during the season for players aged 6 through 9 years old. The season commences in May and lasts through July. As a Seasonal Umpire at The City of Independence, Ohio, you will play a crucial role in ensuring fair play and sportsmanship on the field. You will have the opportunity to interact with players and coaches, keeping track of event times and making split-second decisions to regulate play effectively. Enforcing the rules of the game and assessing penalties, when necessary, will be key responsibilities in maintaining a competitive yet respectful atmosphere. Your ability to settle claims of infractions or complaints by participants will contribute to creating a positive and enjoyable experience for all involved.   • Some experience either umpiring, playing or coaching in the sport, is preferred.
  • Must have a High School Diploma or currently enrolled as a full-time student with a minimum age of 16 years old to be considered.
  • Umpires are prohibited from driving City of Independence owned vehicles, or operating City of Independence equipment of any kind.
  • While umpires are not required to have a State of Ohio Driver's License, they are required to ensure that they arrive for their scheduled work hours on-time and will be subject to standard time and attendance policies and procedures.
  • Must be able to work both evenings and weekends.
  • Must be flexible with scheduling due to possible weather delays and other environmental variables.
  • Umpires must be able to see, speak, and hear clearly.
  • Umpires must be able to stand, walk, squat, kneel, jog, use hands to handle or feel, reach with hands and arms.
  • Umpires will be required to lift up to twenty-five (25) pounds when necessary.
  • Umpires must be capable of working in an outdoor environment under standard Ohio weather conditions.
