About The Position

The City of Independence's Parks & Recreation Department is looking for seasonal certified umpires to work during the season for players aged 10 through 18 years old. The season commences in May and lasts through July. As a Certified Seasonal Umpire at The City of Independence, Ohio, you will play a crucial role in ensuring fair play and sportsmanship on the field. You will have the opportunity to interact with players and coaches, keeping track of event times and making split-second decisions to regulate play effectively. Enforcing the rules of the game and assessing penalties, when necessary, will be key responsibilities in maintaining a competitive yet respectful atmosphere. Your ability to settle claims of infractions or complaints by participants will contribute to creating a positive and enjoyable experience for all involved. Requirements

  • Candidate must currently be a Certified Umpire or be willing and able to become certified.
  • Must have a High School Diploma with a minimum age of 18 years old to be considered.
  • Umpires are prohibited from driving City of Independence owned vehicles, or operating City of Independence equipment of any kind.
  • While umpires are not required to have a State of Ohio Driver's License, they are required to ensure that they arrive for their scheduled work hours on-time and will be subject to standard time and attendance policies and procedures.
  • Must be able to work both evenings and weekends.
  • Must be flexible with scheduling due to possible weather delays and other environmental variables.
  • Umpires must be able to see, speak, and hear clearly.
  • Umpires must be able to stand, walk, squat, kneel, jog, use hands to handle or feel, reach with hands and arms.
  • Umpires will be required to lift up to twenty-five (25) pounds when necessary.
  • Umpires must be capable of working in an outdoor environment under standard Ohio weather conditions.

  • Candidates with their own umpiring equipment will be preferred candidates.
