About The Position

The Maryland Department of Labor, Division of Unemployment Insurance is seeking qualified and motivated individuals for the full-time, contractual position of Unemployment Insurance Professional I functioning as a UI Tax Professional . This recruitment will be used to fill current and future vacancies within the division, and an eligible list of candidates will be maintained for one year after the announcement’s closing date. This position plays a vital role in serving Maryland Employers who are seeking assistance with managing their Unemployment Insurance tax responsibilities. As a UI Tax Professional I , the Unemployment Insurance Professional I will help employers understand and access the services and support available through the state’s Unemployment Insurance program. Employees in this classification receive formal and on-the-job training to learn the duties of a UI Tax Professional I while providing high-quality customer service and supporting the operational functions of the Contributions Division. Through training and assistance to higher-level staff, employees gain knowledge of Maryland Unemployment Insurance laws, regulations, policies, and directives. Employees in this classification will primarily be focused on providing high-quality customer service to employers.

Requirements

  • Four years of experience in a public/or private agency rendering and/or determining eligibility for a Human Service Program or other programs.
  • Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university for the required experience.
  • Personnel employed in this classification will have access to federal tax information and must undergo a state and FBI criminal background check as a condition of employment.
  • All candidates are subject to a background check against files maintained by the Division of Unemployment Insurance (MD Labor/DUI) to determine whether any monies are owed to MD Labor/DUI as a result of unemployment insurance overpayment/fraud.

Responsibilities

  • Answering calls : Answering inbound calls emails or service request in a timely manner and responding professionally when providing accurate information to employers for unemployment insurance tax requirements, excellent customer service is provided over the telephone in order to obtain and record demographic, wage, and tax information, as well as assisting employers and agents in activating their accounts, creating usernames and passwords.
  • Identifying employer needs : Using active listening to understand employer's concerns or questions, and overall needs in order to determine whether the issue involves reporting errors, account registration, tax rate questions, or system-related concerns
  • Providing solutions : Reviewing the employer UI Tax Account information in BEACON Portal, researching any discrepancies, and providing guidance to resolve issues while ensuring compliance with state unemployment insurance requirements.
  • Redirecting employers : Escalate or redirect the employers to the appropriate departments if the issue requires a higher level of review or falls under another specialized unit

Benefits

  • Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.
  • As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled.
  • The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits.
  • You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
  • Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
