About The Position

If you answered "yes" to either of these questions, we are looking for someone like you to join our team in the Intelligent Combat Systems Group at APL! Who are we? We are the Intelligent Combat Systems Group, and our mission focus is to ensure our Nation maintains the operational advantage on the future battlefield through foundational advances in artificial intelligence, autonomy, manned-unmanned teaming and novel unmanned aircraft (e.g. drones) design and testing. We believe the future of warfare will be defined by intelligent autonomous systems capable of fighting with machine precision at machine speeds. Whether it is developing the intelligence that drives autonomous wingmen behaviors, integrated real-time collaboration tools and data analytic architectures, or novel AI design tools and software, the Intelligent Combat Systems Group is at the forefront. As a UAS IntegrationTechnician, you will:

Requirements

  • Have at least a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Have relevant hands-on experience as a technician in aerospace, robotics, mechanical engineering, custom fabrication, or a related military occupational specialty (MOS).
  • Are proficient in the assembly of complex electrical / mechanical systems, with strong skills in soldering and wiring.
  • Have a fundamental understanding of electronics and computer equipment.
  • Can document results clearly using standard office software.
  • Have the ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team and possess strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Are willing and able to occasionally travel and work extended hours in support of field testing.
  • Are able to obtain a Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

Nice To Haves

  • Hold a degree, relevant technical certification (e.g., A&P, J-STD Soldering, IPC certifications), or other experience that would be beneficial to your role as a UAS technician.
  • Have experience with field testing and logistics such as security, shipping, hazardous materials (lithium batteries), frequency authorization, etc.
  • Have extensive experience with composite fabrication, layup, and repair.
  • Hold a current FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate and have experience as a UAS operator or test pilot.
  • Are familiar with UAS autopilot hardware and ground control station software.
  • Have experience with basic machine shop tools (e.g., manual lathe, mill) or CNC operation.
  • Have experience viewing and interpreting mechanical drawings or models using CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks).
  • Are willing and able to travel for up to 10% of your time and can lift over 50 lbs.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the integration of avionics, payloads, and propulsion systems, taking novel uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) from CAD models and bare airframes to flight-ready vehicles by machining, fabricating, and manufacturing parts.
  • Perform composite fabrication and repair, component installation, custom wiring harnesses, and soldering.
  • Assist the field test team, responsible for pre-flight checks, ground station operation, system troubleshooting, and post-flight data analysis.
  • Handle and operate power systems, electronics, and computer equipment.
