About The Position

Tutors are responsible for assisting students academically, social-emotionally, and delivering high quality developmentally appropriate instruction. . This role fosters a safe, nurturing, and engaging learning environment that supports cognitive development through a student-centered, collaborative, and culturally responsive approach. Job Duties and Responsibilities: (Note: Duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted, or changed at the sole discretion of Sycuan Management at any time) Provides one-on-one or small group instruction to students by teaching students study skills, note taking skills, test taking strategies, assisting with homework, discussing testing techniques, working on solutions to problems, reviewing worksheets or other assignments, and assessing students' progress throughout the tutoring session. Promotes productivity and learning by organizing tutoring environment, keeping area free of unnecessary distractions, and promoting productivity and learning. Provides constructive feedback to students by using positive reinforcement techniques, active engagement strategies, checking for understanding, gradual release of responsibility, intrinsic motivation approaches, and building confident learners. . Communicates student progress by monitoring student grades, assignments, and assessments. Maintain and update student records and following up with student’s teachers/school along with the education departmental staff. Maintains open and consistent communication with all stakeholders, including the Lead, Director, team members, and parents. Shares observations related to students emotional and developmental progress, addresses concerns with families in a timely and professional manner, and keeps the Education Department Lead and Director informed of significant parent-teacher communications. Regularly updates Microsoft Teams to ensure accurate and timely documentation. Builds positive, trusting relationships with families by engaging them as partners in their child’s growth and development. Maintains open communication by welcoming students and families, sharing updates on progress, homework completion, and emotional or developmental needs, providing resources and opportunities for involvement, addressing concerns with parents in a timely manner, and informing the Lead and Education Department Director of significant parent-teacher concerns. Provides a safe environment for children by modeling positive behavior strategies, observing children’s behaviors, enforcing expectations for behavior, and reporting any unusual situations and/or suspected abuse to the Lead and Education Department Director. Supports the Education Department by attending required meetings, events, and assisting with special projects as assigned. Schedule for the position is part-time, 1 PM – 5 PM. The majority of our students (25-30) attend the learning center from 2:00 PM – 4:30 PM with the support of 6 additional teachers/tutors. During the summer we run a full-day camp style program and collaborate with our cultural center, recreation center, and several other neighboring reservations. We are seeking an individual committed to our mission, “to empower, educate, and support the development of Sycuan youth to be innovative and empathetic leaders.”

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Education or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Teacher, and/or tutor experience
  • CPR and First Aid Certificate or willing to certify upon hire
  • Ability to work with children from Kindergarten to 6th grade
  • Ability to plan curriculum
  • Ability to scaffold and breakdown academic concepts
  • Ability to communicate effectively in the English language
  • Ability to prioritize and perform multiple tasks and assignments
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal directives and written directions
  • Ability to sit, stand and walk for up to 8 hours a day
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks
  • Ability to appear for work on time
  • Ability to implement effective behavior management strategies
  • Ability to be solution-oriented
  • Ability to develop, read, and implement lesson plans
  • Ability to provide guidance to staff Working knowledge of Office 365, MS TEAMS, MS Word and Excel
  • Ability to perform basic data entry
  • Ability to maintain filing systems
  • Ability to accept constructive criticism
  • Ability to lift up to fifty (50)lbs.

Nice To Haves

  • Single or multiple subject teaching credential
  • Courses in Kumeyaay studies
  • Experience working with Native American families/Students
