TUTOR III (Student/Work Study)

University Of Michigan (The Regents @ Ann Arbor)Ann Arbor, MI

About The Position

Role of the Tutor: When considering your application for this position, it's important to note that tutors are not editors. They work holistically with all phases of the writing process to help students develop their own ideas, work through writing related issues, learn to use online writing and citation resources, and receive feedback based on the tutors? own understanding as a reader-not authoritatively evaluate like an editor or teacher. This distinction can often be a shock to new tutors. The most important skills in a tutor's toolbox are interpersonal communication: asking thoughtful questions, active listening, being a collaborator, and empowering the student's own ideas. Therefore, there is an initial training phase, but training continues throughout the tutor's employment. We also have required attendance at monthly staff meetings that occur on Fridays that supports additional training and professional development.

  • Strong writing, research, communication, presentation, and public speaking skills
