About The Position

Under general direction, the Tumor Registrar is responsible for the collection and reporting of data regarding cancer identification, treatment, and follow-up on each eligible cancer patient. This role participates in data quality activities such as peer audits, data edits, and special quality projects as assigned. The Tumor Registrar maintains the cancer registry database(s) and generates necessary reports to meet the needs of the cancer registry customers. This is a 100% onsite opportunity at UChicago Medicine in Hyde Park, requiring the candidate to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, Computer Science, or related field
  • Registered Health Information certification (RHIT, RHIA) by the American Health Information Management Association or Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) certification required by the National Cancer Registrars Association.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal. Ability to communicate effectively within a team and with physicians and allied healthcare professionals.
  • Ability to assess clinical source documents (i.e. pathology reports, operative reports, discharge summaries, clinic notes, chemotherapy records, radiation therapy reports, etc.) and apply coding rules.
  • Skills in problem solving, investigating, organizing, and prioritizing within a system that has frequently changing priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to work both independently, and within a team environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, Computer Science, or related field
  • Computer skills including: cancer registry databases and networked hospital information systems, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Internet.
  • Working knowledge of the following coding systems and manuals: Collaborative Staging, AJCC Cancer Staging, SEER Summary Staging, ICD-O Coding, Facility Oncology Registry Data Standards (FORDS), Illinois State Cancer Registry (ISCR) Reporting Manual.
  • Working knowledge of the Cancer Program Standards of American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.

Responsibilities

  • Case-finding: Analyzes coded disease indexes, tumor conference minutes, staging forms, radiation reports, surgical reports, pathology reports, and autopsy reports to determine case eligibility; Classifies each case as reportable or non-reportable, and assigns class of case. Enters reportable cases into database suspense system.
  • Abstracting Cases: Examines and interprets cancer-specific data from the medical record and other sources for coding and data entry into a computerized cancer registry abstract. Verifies clinical information with medical staff in order to ensure appropriate assignment of cancer diagnoses, treatments, and procedures, and to ensure that data reflect the current standard-of-care for each patient per primary, per histological type, per stage of disease.
  • Cancer Staging: Analyzes both clinical and pathological diagnostic/staging procedures and test results to determine a derived collaborative stage. In addition, audits medical records for documentation by the managing physician. If staging is missing, incomplete, or inaccurate, the registrar recommends the TNM value assignments, with supporting documentation and text reference.
  • Follow-up: Collects patient follow-up and survival data from the medical record, follow-up correspondence with patient and/or physician, and any other applicable sources for coding and direct on-line data entry into the computerized cancer registry database. Calculates and reports rates of patient follow-up on a regular basis.
  • Quality Assurance: Audits cancer registry data for accuracy and completeness through peer reviews, database edits system, case debates, and participation in the Cancer Registry Data Quality Subcommittee.
  • Participates in meetings as required and provides assistance to immediate supervisor. Presents regular reports on cancer registry assignments to monthly subcommittee meetings and quarterly Cancer Committee meetings. Database Maintenance: Enters and maintains patient computer data to ensure conformance to cancer registry operational standards; preserves the confidentiality and security of patient data stored in cancer registry files.
  • Troubleshoots: Recognizes and understands potential computer problems/errors/malfunctions. Reports the problem/error/malfunction to manager/staff and/or to UCMC/BSD Information Services or to the Registry software vendor representative. Assists in care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies. Perform other related tasks as may be deemed necessary for the effective and efficient functioning of the Tumor Registry. Maintain credentials with the American Health Information Management Association or National Cancer Registry Association by participating in continuing education seminars and professional activities to obtain required credit hours.

  • The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
