About The Position

The TRiO/Student Support Services Academic and Learning Advisor provides advising and support services to students who are eligible for the TRiO/Student Support Services (SSS) program (consisting of eligible first-generation, low-income, academically under-prepared, and/or disabled college students) to successfully graduate with a two-year degree, transfer to a four-year institution, and/or achieve their academic goals. The TRiO/SSS Academic and Learning Advisor is also responsible for conducting activities in support of the program's success, compliance, and College needs; increasing awareness and understanding of the program through various outreach and promotional activities; and assisting the TRiO/SSS Director in recommending new hires, training, and supervising.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of higher education, particularly community colleges.
  • Knowledge and understanding of barriers confronted by the TRiO SSS population.
  • Knowledge of instructional and counseling techniques that are proven to be effective with first-generation, low-income, academically under-prepared, and/or disabled college students.
  • Skilled in individual academic advising, career exploration, and personal counseling and referral.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and professionally in both oral and written formats, including public speaking, teaching, interpersonal skills, facilitating workshops, promoting programs, and the like.
  • Proficiency in the use of technology to support program goals.
  • Skilled in utilizing a team approach in solving problems.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to respectfully work with students, staff, faculty, and members of the public with diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated empathy with individuals from diverse social, economic, ethnic, academic, disability, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
  • This position does require administrative work on grant-funded program activities and reporting.
  • Associate's degree in education, behavioral or social sciences, or a related field, required.
  • Two (2) years of experience in advising, teaching, recruitment, counseling, or related experience in an applicable setting, with knowledge of the needs of first-generation, low-income, academically underprepared, and/or disabled students strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides advising and support services to students who are eligible for the TRiO/SSS program (consisting of eligible first generation, low-income, academically under-prepared, and/or disabled college students) to successfully graduate with a two-year degree, transfer to a four-year institution, and/or achieve their academic goals.
  • Maintains a caseload of assigned participants for individual academic guidance.
  • Monitors, evaluates, and reports on participants' academic progress, intervening with appropriate resources and refers to appropriate on- and off-campus support services as needed.
  • Collaborates with faculty to monitor students' progress in courses, resolve students' concerns, and strategize with faculty to help with student success.
  • Coordinates the Individual Academic Plan (IAP) for all students in assigned caseload.
  • Assesses program and individual needs and barriers to success and makes recommendations for student success and retention.
  • Utilizes college Early Alert system to monitor program and individual progress.
  • Provides holistic wrap-around support and intrusive advising to assist students completing individual courses and programs of study, graduating, and transferring to a four-year institution.
  • Assists with planning, organizing, implementing, and coordinating events/workshops.
  • Advocates for program participants as appropriate.
  • Conducts activities in support of the program's success, compliance, and College needs.
  • Monitors student progress and maintains records in accordance with federal grant regulations and College policies.
  • Ensures that participants meet the requirements of active involvement in the program so that the goals and objectives of the TRiO SSS grant are met.
  • Assist in selecting and training peer mentors.
  • Assists the TRiO SSS Director with evaluating program effectiveness.
  • Collaborates with a variety of College and Community stakeholders to promote student and program success while adhering to Federal and College polices and procedures.
  • Increases awareness and understanding of the TRiO program through various outreach and promotional activities.
  • Contributes to the development and implementation of multiple educational efforts, including career advising workshops, College visits, college success courses, and beneficial multicultural services.
  • Coordinates statewide college visits for interested students.
  • Participates on College committees as needed.
  • Recommends new hires, trains, and supervises staff.
  • Assists the Director, as needed, in recommending new hires, training, and scheduling peer mentors.
  • Conducts performance appraisals and monitors conformance to College policies.
  • Contributes to the development of peer mentors by providing frequent performance feedback, providing opportunities for professional growth, encouraging input, empowering decision-making, and equipping the employees to succeed in their roles.
