About The Position

The Tree Pruning Technician assists the Lead Arborist by supervising pruning crews, training student employees, safely operating equipment, maintaining tree inventory data, and ensuring proper cleanup and safety on campus. This role requires tree climbing and pruning skills, adherence to safety guidelines and BYU’s Honor Code, strong professionalism, and the ability to mentor and train others effectively.

Physical Exam and Lift Test Required
Physical Effort Moderate – Physical effort represented by frequent handling of medium weight objects (approx. 20-50 lbs.) and materials, or use of medium weight hand tools. May require climbing and working from ladders or in awkward positions.
Relocate 50 lbs. of materials multiple times per day
Periodic exposure to unfavorable conditions because of unavoidable need to be in variable temperatures or wet environments, etc.
Moderate existing or potential hazards
Operate pruning equipment such as hedge trimmers, chainsaws, and blowers for 30 minutes to 4 hours, up to 5 days per week; wear hearing protection, gloves, helmet, eye protection, and closed-toe shoes.
Work outdoors year-round in all types of weather, performing tasks such as bending, stretching, and handling rough surfaces; wear gloves, long sleeves, coat, headgear, and appropriate footwear.
Remove large limbs and lift tarps with trimmings into trucks and trailers multiple times per day as needed; use proper lifting techniques and team lifts.
Work along sidewalks, roadways, and campus areas while maintaining safety for self and others; wear safety vests, gloves, and other required PPE.

Nice To Haves

Certified Arborist - or ability to obtain after hire
Ability to obtain a UDOT medical card
Certification or previous experience in chainsaw operation

Responsibilities

Operate all equipment in a safe and effective manner to minimize the risk of injury and property damage
Interact with Campus, MTC, and Church employees and visitors in a professional manner
Assists the Lead Arborist by supervising one to two pruning crews
Oversee the online and individual training for trees for student employees
Online and individual training for proper equipment use, maintenance, and operation
Ensure that clean-up is completed properly for area worked on during the day to ensure safety for campus community and for gardening crew
If sub-standard cleaning, adequate training reiterated
Update data of tree inventory, location, square-footage, issues
Verify the accuracy of data when updating Geographic Information Systems (GIS) information as requested
On call during snow season to work within a team scope in assigned snow removal area to clear walks, stairs, roads, plazas, crosswalks and ADA areas, parking lots and as necessary, athletic fields, in a safe and nondestructive manner
