About The Position

To be responsible for the performance of on-site water or wastewater treatment plant operation on shift assigned.

Requirements

  • Two (2) years of college with major course work in chemistry, biology, or environmental sciences.
  • Three (3) years of experience in the operation of a unit of a large water/wastewater treatment plant.
  • Must possess a Class "B" Florida Operator's Certificate; will consider A, B, or C License.
  • Possession of and ability to maintain a valid State of Florida Driver's License is required.
  • Working knowledge of machines, equipment, materials and operating procedures of a water or wastewater treatment plant.
  • Working knowledge of the safety factors involved in handling water/sewage plant equipment.
  • Working knowledge of computers, radio telemetry and SCADA systems.
  • Ability to conduct laboratory tests, make accurate readings and keep routine records.
  • Ability to understand and carry out complicated written and oral work orders.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and with the general public.
  • Ability to work overtime, various shifts, weekends, holidays and be on call.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with the public.

Responsibilities

  • Operates or checks the operation of all plant equipment (i.e., pumps, valves, electric motors, filters, large stationary engines, etc.) at a main water/sewage treatment plant.
  • Routes flow of water/sewage fluids and gases.
  • Regulates and helps maintain records of flow, tank level, chemical feed rates, etc., between various stages of treatment.
  • Reads meters and gauges.
  • Performs tests of water including pH, chlorine, residual, conductivity, turbidity, etc.
  • Conducts standardized tests.
  • Maintains operating logs at all plants/stations.
  • Cleans, oils, and performs minor preventive maintenance on pumps, motors and similar equipment.
  • Keeps plant facilities clean and orderly.
  • Makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
  • May request assistance relative to skilled labor and clerical work which may be incidental to plant maintenance/operation.
