About The Position

The Trauma Nurse Supervisor provides clinical leadership, staff supervision, and educational oversight for trauma nursing services at Howard University Hospital. This role guides and motivates trauma nursing staff across assigned shifts to ensure high-quality, evidence-based care for injured patients while supporting trauma program standards, staff development, and regulatory compliance. The Supervisor partners closely with the Trauma Program Director to oversee staff performance, coordinate trauma education initiatives, and promote excellence across emergency, critical care, perioperative, and post-acute trauma settings.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) required
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license to practice in the District of Columbia required
  • Minimum 3 years of progressive trauma nursing experience required
  • Minimum 1 year of supervisory experience (preferably in nursing leadership) required
  • Must have worked in an acute care facility within the past 5 years
  • BLS and ACLS required
  • TNCC Provider required within 30 days of hire
  • TNCC Instructor required within 1 year of hire
  • Strong leadership, mentoring, and staff development capabilities
  • Excellent clinical judgment and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to lead trauma education and competency programs
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and clinical documentation systems
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, nursing leadership, and interdisciplinary teams

Responsibilities

  • Provide daily clinical and supervisory oversight for trauma nursing staff, including performance assessment, coaching, counseling, and disciplinary actions in collaboration with the Trauma Program Director
  • Serve as a clinical and professional resource for trauma nurses, supporting problem-solving, critical thinking, and patient care decision-making
  • Coordinate and administer Trauma education programs, including TNCC and ATLS
  • Design and implement competency-based education and simulation training for nurses, physicians, residents, and interdisciplinary trauma team members
  • Support nurse professional development activities, including orientation, in-services, continuing education, competency validation, and trauma-related research initiatives
  • Promote compliance with trauma-related regulatory and accreditation standards
  • Participate in departmental planning, quality improvement initiatives, and multidisciplinary trauma care coordination
  • Foster collaboration and unity across shifts, departments, and service lines to ensure seamless trauma care delivery
  • Provide direct patient care as needed to maintain safe staffing levels and support clinical operations
