This posting is for a Transportation Worker II located in the Fayetteville Roadside Environmental Division in Cumberland County. The work involves seeding and mulching, plant bed maintenance and herbicide applications. The work also includes operation, inspection and maintenance of equipment including trucks, tractors, tractor attachments, mulch blower and similar equipment, as well as hand and power tools. This position will also have responsibilities during snow and ice operations. Additional Expectations: The selected candidate must be able to legally operate Class A CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions and have a Tanker (N) endorsement at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Employees must be able to operate medium dump truck safely. Skill in the safe use & care of assigned equipment, hand & power tools, & perform manual maintenance duties & other duties as directed by supervisor. Employees must have the ability to act upon both verbal & written communication. Employees must have the ability to traverse steep and uneven terrain. Employees must have ability to lift 50 lbs. Employee must be able to work in extreme temperature conditions. Employees at this level may train and operate equipment associated with the advanced level (Equipment Category A"). Duties and functions must be performed with minimal direct supervision. Safety toe shoes are required. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and (3) three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of vegetation management including, but not limited to shrubs, trees, fertilizer, etc. using sound horticultural practices
  • Experience in applying herbicides to control weeds and brush
  • Experience in operation of pesticide applicators, truck, tractors, and utility vehicles
  • Experience in at least one (1) piece of Category B equipment (asphalt distributor, front end loader, dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, mulch blower, sod seeder, tractor with sprayer attachments, brush chipper, conventional pesticide applicator, front end loader, hydro seeder, skid steer)
