About The Position

The NC Department of Transportation aims to connect people, products, and places safely and efficiently, with a focus on customer service, accountability, and environmental sensitivity, to enhance North Carolina's economy and vitality. This Transportation Worker II position, located in Division 12's Gaston County Maintenance Office, is crucial for improving and maintaining a safe highway system. The role involves installing traffic and erosion control devices, operating various hand and power tools, and performing diverse maintenance and upgrade tasks on the highway system. These tasks include work on pavement, shoulders, ditches/drainage facilities, vegetation control, litter/debris removal, and snow and ice control/removal, as well as responding to other emergency situations. As the employee gains experience and ability, they will operate a wide range of equipment, from single axle dump trucks and loaders to graders, excavators, and more complex machinery, with the complexity increasing with progression from TW I to TW V. The work specifically focuses on the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of State-maintained roads within Gaston County.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies
  • Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures
  • Experience in at least two pieces of Category B Maintenance equipment (asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, truck w/aerial device)
  • Experience in one of the following: pipe installation, installation of erosion control devices, snow and ice removal, ditch maintenance or asphalt patching

Responsibilities

  • Improve and provide a safe highway system
  • Install traffic and erosion control devices
  • Operate a variety of hand and power tools
  • Perform various maintenance repairs/upgrades to the highway system, including pavement, shoulders, ditches/drainage facilities, vegetation control, litter/debris removal, snow and ice control/removal
  • Respond to other emergency situations as may be required
  • Operate a wide variety of equipment, ranging from single axle dump trucks and loaders to graders, excavators, and other more complex pieces (as experience, ability, and Department needs mandate)
  • Set up work zones
  • Repair asphalt pavements
  • Clear right of way of debris and hazards
  • Assist with pipe installation
  • Operate various equipment that includes but is not limited to an asphalt maintainer, asphalt patch truck, tandem dump truck, crack sealing machine, rollers, sweepers, skid steer, and backhoe
  • Monitor tasks performed by inmates and other transportation workers
  • Respond to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, and traffic control cleanup, etc. during normal business hours or during emergency callback situations and scheduled night work
