About The Position

This is a repost. All previous applicants must reapply to be considered. This posting is for a Transportation Worker II position in the Lexington Bridge Maintenance Unit. Manual and equipment operational work involved in the maintenance and replacement of bridges, pipes, and reinforced concrete box culverts. Work will include but is not limited to small hand tools, carpentry tools, placing and finishing of concrete, two-way radio communications, operating a chainsaw and an introduction to erosion control. Operation of dump truck and being able to secure and haul loads, air compressor, forklift, vibratory roller, front end loader, backhoe, lowboy, and truck mounted crane. Ability to rig loads for lifting, tie reinforcing steel and conduct flagging operations. Experience with pipe installation and drainage maintenance, carpentry work which includes forming and layout, cutting and fitting structural steel to close tolerances, plan development and layout of traffic control in a work zone for 2 lane road, installation and maintenance of erosion control devices and transporting of materials or equipment utilizing a truck and trailer. Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
  • The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement.
  • Pre-employment drug testing will be required.
  • As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing.
  • In order to obtain an inmate card applicants must undergo a criminal history check, complete necessary training and orientation, and be at least 21 years of age.
  • Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
  • Physical activities required are standing, walking in uneven terrain, climbing, lifting a minimum of 50lbs., talking and hearing.
  • Also exposed to extreme conditions such as ice, snow, dust, extreme heat and cold, high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment.
  • Must not be afraid of heights.
  • Safety-toed shoes required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience performing drainage maintenance activities (such as shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, and drainage structures).
  • Working knowledge of standard Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies.
  • Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, asphalt patching, or snow and ice removal.
  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper.
  • Experience constructing formwork (such as concrete forms for curbs, sidewalks, landscaping, or other construction related formwork) using skilled carpentry techniques.
  • General skills in a wide variety of functional areas including pile driving, carpentry, concrete work, machine operation, contract inspection.

  • Repair and replacement of culverts, bridges, large diameter pipe, bulkheads, and pile clusters.
  • Sandblasting, lead paint removal, painting, steel fabrication and straightening of steel beams.
  • Trenching & shoring and bushing & shrubbing.
  • Transporting inmates for work detail.
