The Department of Environmental Services (DES) is seeking an enthusiastic early career Traffic Systems Engineer who’s excited to learn, grow, and help support the next generation of mobility solutions. As a member of our Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) team within the Transportation Engineering and Operations (TEO) Bureau, you’ll contribute to the development and operation of the smart infrastructure that keeps our community moving — including traffic signals, streetlights, and connected ITS technologies. In this hands-on role, you’ll gain valuable experience applying emerging technologies to real-world transportation challenges. You’ll work closely with the Department of Technology Services (DTS) and collaborate with experienced engineers to learn how traffic engineering and modern IT systems come together through networking, data management, asset management, and system integration. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Computer Science or other applicable engineering discipline.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting ITS projects by assisting with traffic camera deployments, selecting and installing count stations, and helping manage roadside devices such as school beacons, RRFBs, and speed feedback signs
  • Helping develop tools and simple dashboards that improve real-time monitoring and maintenance tracking for field devices.
  • Contributing to drafting and updating policies, performance measures, and standard operating procedures under the guidance of senior engineers
  • Coordinating with the Department of Technology Services (DTS) on fiber related tasks such as basic server needs, switch configurations, and ITS device connectivity
  • Assisting in communication and coordination efforts with Arlington Public Schools, state agencies, and utility/telecom partners involved in ITS operations
  • Participating in researching new ITS technologies, helping gather information, conduct preliminary benefit-cost reviews, and support systems engineering documentation
  • Maintaining and updating ITS asset data in Cartegraph and supports workflow management for operational tasks
  • Provides support in strategic planning activities, including preparing budget materials and gathering information for funding requests.
