About The Position

The primary purpose of this position is to supervise a bridge maintenance crew within assigned county. This position will also monitor expenditures, maintain work records, time sheets, job reports and inventory records. This position will assist the Transportation Supervisor Advanced to staff and plan work operations and train employees on-the-job. In addition, this position will ensure that equipment is maintained and serviced as required, investigate public complaints and recommend solutions. This position will work under limited supervision and may include other duties and responsibilities as assigned. This position is located at 205 Caison Drive Hampstead Bridge Maintenance Yard. The position supervises one or more crews in work related to maintenance and construction of bridges, pipes, and reinforced concrete box culverts. This is a working supervisor position in the repair and maintenance of timber and steel bridges; removal and replacement of bridge components such as beams, pilings, flooring, caps, rails, etc.; removal and replacement of concrete components; sandblasting and/or cleaning concrete; application of epoxy sealants to bridge decks and caps; construction of structures following engineering layout; forming and placing footings, pile driving, building/installing pier systems and replacing culverts.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience. Experience must be related to functional area of the work that the position will supervise.
  • Have the ability to read and interpret construction and repair plans taking into consideration environmental concerns.
  • Have the ability to plan, monitor, and review daily work assignments, making adjustments to project plan conditions.
  • Plan, monitor and ensure safety standards are adhered to in various areas.
  • Ability to document material and equipment usage.
  • Ability to make visual inspection of bridge structures, note deficiencies and report on each bridge annually.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pound.
  • Must be able to understand and comply with verbal and written instructions.
  • The selected candidate must be able to legally operate Class A CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.
  • May be required to work nights and holidays.
  • Steel toe safety shoes required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in bridge maintenance and repair, as well as, bridge maintenance equipment operation
  • Experience in record keeping, such as tracking employee and equipment time and recording quantities of materials used
  • Experience in planning work and supervising a bridge crew
  • Experience in Basic Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices
  • Experience inspecting bridges for minor maintenance needs
