About The Position

This position is for a Transportation Supervisor I in the Stokes County Maintenance Department. The employee will supervise activities of a county maintenance shoulder/ditching crew or pavement maintenance crew. Key responsibilities include counseling and disciplining employees, managing expenditures, maintaining various work and inventory records, planning and adjusting work operations, training employees, conducting performance reviews, and interviewing/recommending new staff. The role also involves ensuring equipment maintenance and investigating public complaints/inquiries. Work assignments encompass grading, patching, pavement maintenance, emergency response to spills and debris, and clearing snow and ice. The position requires visual acuity, physical exertion (bending, walking, standing on uneven terrain, lifting/carrying 80 lbs), and exposure to extreme conditions such as ice, snow, dust, heat, cold, high traffic, and heavy construction equipment. This role is subject to emergency call back, scheduled night work, and out-of-town travel during adverse weather. A valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement is required, either upon hire or obtained within 360 days. Pre-employment drug testing, a background check for controlled substance and alcohol testing history, and safety-toed shoes are mandatory. The supervisor will also be responsible for transporting inmates for work detail, which requires obtaining an inmate card (contingent on a criminal history check, training, and being at least 21 years of age). The offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion of an NCDOT post-offer employment evaluation.

Requirements

  • Requires visual acuity

  • Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle
  • Possession of a current North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire
  • Pre-employment drug testing will be required
  • Completion and signing of a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing
  • Safety-toed shoes required
  • Ability to obtain an inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety (requires undergoing a criminal history check, completing necessary training and orientation, and being at least 21 years of age)
  • Successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation
  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience
  • Experience must be related to functional area of the work that the position will supervise
