About The Position

Transportation Planning Internship College to County Internship 2026 - Transportation Planning Pay Rate: $24 per hour Job Type: Temporary College Intern Duration: Summer 2026 - Starting in June - 12 weeks Hours: 20 - 40 hours a week Telework: Hybrid, in office on Tuesdays. Outreach events in east Multnomah County on some weekends and evenings will be part of this position. Building Physical Location: Multnomah Building, 501 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland Outreach activities originating at Yeon Annex, 1600 SE 190th Ave, Portland. What Does Transportation Planning Do? Transportation Planning provides safe, accessible, and sustainable transportation services that improve outcomes for community health, mobility, and equity. The Transportation Planning team conducts a wide variety of planning activities that include road safety programs, transit programs, oversight of stakeholder committees, and water quality programs. Transportation Planning Programs Internship Description & Responsibilities: This intern will gain knowledge and experience with a team of transportation planners who do a wide variety of work. Possible projects include: Transportation Safety Action Plan (TSAP) Develop outreach materials for in-person engagement events. Participate in public outreach at multiple events, including scooter and bicycle education lessons or events. Safe Routes to School (SRTS) On-campus school circulation planning Compile and organize annual events materials for school communications and community newsletters. Transit Community engagement to promote our rural transit and urban job connector shuttle programs, including the opportunity to engage members of underserved communities who are speakers of other languages (esp. speakers of Spanish, Somali or Vietnamese); Outreach to businesses and community organizations in the Cully and Parkrose neighborhoods as well as rural Multnomah County Coordination with other jurisdictional partners (City of Portland, Port of Portland, TriMet, Metro, and others) and Contribute to survey development and stakeholder identification for county transit services Learning Outcomes: This internship offers excellent learning opportunities in transportation planning while working with multiple programs at the same time. The intern will gain an understanding of: Day-to-day work of planning coordination across the county and with external partners (such as consultants and other jurisdictions). Community engagement: inclusive outreach strategies and activities, educational planning, leadership development. Direct public engagement, including supply organization, set up and take down of materials. Develop an interactive display to collect public impressions of transportation safety on east county roads, based on previous outreach efforts. Research and organization of year round school outreach materials for school communications. Transit planning, operations, and analysis, with a focus on difficult-to-serve locations (rural areas, industrial/freight corridors) Introduction to Stakeholder Committee management, transportation policy, and water quality work. Introduction to County Water Quality Program

Requirements

  • Candidates should have completed within one year or enrolled in a college/university academic institution.
  • Meet all criteria listed on the College to County Program Eligibility Website
