About The Position

Bridge Engineering Internship College to County Internship 2026 - Department of Community Services - Transportation Division Pay Rate: $24 per hour Job Type: Temporary College Intern Duration: Summer 2026 - Starting in June - 12 weeks Hours: 40 hours a week Telework: Hybrid (up to two days per week remote) Building Physical Location: Bridge Shop (1403 SE Water Ave., Portland, OR 97214) Does This Position Require Driving a County Vehicle? If so, please explain why and frequency: This described position will be required to drive a County vehicle to access project sites across the county to periodically access urban and rural roadways, either accessible or not to public transportation. Additionally, this position will travel to multiple locations, moving and making stops frequently where public transportation is not reasonably available to complete the task efficiently. We anticipate this position to use a County vehicle on a weekly basis or more based on activities assigned. TriMet Passes are available if transportation to County facilities is required. Eligibility requirements and more details found on our College to County website. What Does Transportation, Do? The Multnomah County Transportation Division manages and maintains nearly 270 miles of roadway serving the cities of Fairview, Troutdale, and Wood Village, as well as unincorporated areas including Sauvie Island, the West Hills and the Corbett area. The division also maintains six Willamette River bridges and critical infrastructure. Our work spans six core programs: Transportation Planning and Development, Road Engineering, Road Maintenance, Bridge Engineering, Bridge Maintenance, and Survey. As a Bridge Engineering Intern, you will join the Bridge Shop section and support the delivery of capital improvement projects that preserve and enhance the County’s bridge assets. Internship Description & Responsibilities: Multnomah County is seeking one Engineering Intern to support bridge-related capital improvement projects within the Transportation Division. In this role, you will perform engineering technician-level work and contribute directly to active design and construction efforts. You will collaborate with County project managers, construction inspectors, professional engineers, contractors and community stakeholders. We assign meaningful, productive work that builds practical engineering experience and exposes you to real-world public infrastructure delivery. You will gain hands-on experience in transportation engineering areas such as asset management, planning, design review, plan review, construction review and project management. Other responsibilities will include; Support the County’s project manager in responsibilities during design and construction of capital projects Assist the County’s on-site construction inspector in site reports and quality documentation Help develop outreach materials for ongoing construction projects Assist in AutoCAD design developing plan sets for maintenance and improvement projects Track project progress, review plans, and support construction documentation Perform additional technical and administrative duties as assigned by engineering staff This position requires both office and field work. You will work in active construction zones and traffic environments and perform site visits in varying weather conditions. Learning Outcomes: Through this internship, you will strengthen your understanding of transportation and bridge assets, including evaluation, regulatory compliance, and construction methods. Other learning objectives will include; Learn how a public agency plans, designs, and delivers capital improvement projects. Apply engineering fundamentals to real-world bridge and transportation challenges. Develop technical skills in engineering design, documentation, and construction management. Improving written and verbal communication skills through collaboration with County staff, contractors, and external partners. Recognize the importance of stakeholder engagement and informed engineering decision making. Gain familiarity with engineering standards, agency procedures, and project documentation requirements.

Requirements

  • We seek candidates who demonstrate initiative, technical curiosity, and strong communication skills.
  • Additionally, an individual with major course work in civil engineering, construction management, or related field or two years of job training, internships, or work study experience and possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Candidates should have completed one year in a college/university academic institution enrolled in Civil Engineering program
  • Familiarity with Google Suite Workspace (e.g., Gmail, Calendar, Meet, Drive, Docs, and Slides)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Effective problem-solving and analytical abilities.
  • This position must work in the field as well as in an office setting.
  • The candidate must be willing and able to drive; work in traffic; willing and able to work outdoors in various (and possibly adverse) weather conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • Basic knowledge of the fundamental principles of engineering mathematics preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of traffic engineering fundamentals preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of construction practices and procedures preferred.
  • Ability to perform designated shop and office duties as may be required such as project tracking, preparing and interpreting plans for construction, and/or understanding a variety of maps and drawings preferred.
