About The Position

The Maine Turnpike Authority (MTA) is seeking a Transportation Planner/Traffic Engineer to join its Engineering team in Portland, Maine. Reporting to the Engineering Program Manager, this position supports MTA's mission by analyzing, planning, and implementing transportation and traffic projects that enhance mobility, safety, and efficiency across the Turnpike system. The role conducts traffic impact analyses, flow studies, and system performance evaluations; develops and evaluates traffic management strategies; and leads assigned transportation planning projects and studies for the Authority. Responsibilities include reviewing signage, striping, intersections, interchanges, and Maintenance of Traffic plans; interpreting traffic modeling and simulation results (e.g., Synchro, VISSIM); analyzing hourly and daily traffic data; supporting crash analysis and safety improvements; assisting with public participation requirements; preparing reports, graphics, and public information materials; and participating in public outreach and regional planning committees in coordination with MTA Engineering, ITS, Security, and Public Relations staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Planning, Traffic Engineering, or a related field
  • At least five years of experience in transportation planning or traffic engineering
  • Understanding of traffic engineering principles, traffic signal design, and roadway safety
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders
  • Valid Maine Class C driver's license

Nice To Haves

  • A Professional Engineering (PE) license or transportation planning certification
  • Experience with traffic analysis and modeling software (e.g., Synchro, VISSIM)
