About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! This posting is for a Regional Correctional Transportation Officer position. This individual will report directly to the Regional Security Coordinators in the Central Region Office located in Raleigh, NC, Wake County, but will serve the geographic area of the region as needed to transport offender(s), in departmental vehicles. The working title for this position is Correctional Officer III. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: Exercising independent decision-making within established policies and procedures due to the physical separation from supervisory personnel. Providing custody supervision of offender(s) in their custody and control. Enforcing rules and regulations for safety, health, and protection of offenders. Performing searches of persons, places, and objects. Performing rescue functions to include, CPR, basic first aid, physically removing people from dangerous areas and using fire equipment to including fire hoses, extinguishers and breathing apparatuses. Establishing and maintaining control of violent or uncooperative offenders. Being able to defend oneself or others against violent attacks. Loading, unloading, aiming, and firing handguns, shotguns, and rifles at the level of proficiency required, and always maintain a professional demeanor to include times of mental and verbal abuse by offender. Effectively communicate with offenders, staff, and members of the public. Will perform other duties assigned by the Regional Office.

Requirements

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience as a Correctional Officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
