About The Position

The Transportation Manager is responsible for the coordination and continuous improvement of the transportation program for Waynesboro Public Schools. This position ensures the safe, efficient, and reliable transportation of students by overseeing routing, driver coordination, stakeholder communication, and contingency planning. The Transportation Manager works closely with the Executive Director of Operations and division leaders to ensure transportation services align with the operational and instructional needs of the school division.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, public administration, education, logistics, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience in transportation management, logistics coordination, school operations, or a related field is required.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Strong organizational and logistical planning skills.
  • Ability to analyze routing data and make operational adjustments.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain calm, decisive, and solutions-focused in high-pressure situations.
  • Strong problem-solving and contingency planning abilities.
  • Knowledge of transportation safety standards and regulations.
  • Proficiency in routing software and general computer applications.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods and use standard office equipment.
  • Ability to operate a school bus or van safely.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies, which may require travel between sites and exposure to outdoor weather conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • Supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
  • Experience in K–12 public school transportation strongly preferred.
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with school bus endorsements (or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe) is preferred.
  • Must meet all state and division requirements for operating a school bus or student transportation vehicle.

Responsibilities

  • Program Coordination and Routing Develop, coordinate, and maintain bus and van routes to ensure safe, timely, and efficient transportation of students.
  • Utilize routing software and student data systems to optimize route efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Monitor route performance and adjust routes as needed based on enrollment changes, road conditions, construction, or other operational factors.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local transportation regulations and school division policies.
  • Driver Supervision and Communication Serve as the primary point of contact for bus and van drivers regarding daily operations, route assignments, and expectations.
  • Communicate regularly with drivers to address concerns, provide updates, and ensure consistent service delivery.
  • Assist with recruitment, onboarding coordination, scheduling, and retention efforts for transportation staff.
  • Support training and professional development initiatives in collaboration with division leadership.
  • Stakeholder Communication Communicate effectively and professionally with parents/guardians regarding routes, schedules, delays, and transportation concerns.
  • Collaborate with school principals, office staff, and division leaders to coordinate transportation needs for regular school days, special programs, field trips, and extracurricular activities.
  • Respond promptly and appropriately to inquiries, concerns, or complaints related to transportation services.
  • Contingency Planning and Problem Solving Develop and implement contingency plans for driver absences, vehicle breakdowns, inclement weather, or other unexpected disruptions.
  • Adjust routes in real time as necessary to maintain continuity of service.
  • Maintain substitute driver coverage plans and emergency routing procedures.
  • Coordinate with maintenance staff to address mechanical issues that impact transportation operations.
  • Operational Oversight Maintain accurate transportation records, including routes, ridership data, incident reports, and compliance documentation.
  • Support budget planning and resource allocation related to transportation operations.
  • Ensure vehicles are used efficiently and in accordance with division policies and safety standards.
  • Assist in reviewing and updating transportation procedures and operational guidelines.
  • Work collaboratively with our vehicle maintenance vendor to maintain our fleet.
  • Direct Service as Needed Maintain appropriate licensure and certification to operate a school bus or division vehicle.
  • Drive a bus or van when necessary to ensure students are transported safely during staffing shortages, emergencies, or other operational needs.
