About The Position

Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Requirements

  • High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.
  • 5 years experience in roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and must have or obtain, within 90 days of employment, "N" endorsement

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments, serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members' career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage.
  • Assists in administration of the maintenance section.
  • Oversees contract workers and coordinates applicable activities.
  • Oversees the work of designated maintenance inspectors and sign technicians.
  • Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads, put-up warning signs, and organize response of crews.
  • Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment.
  • Monitors materials testing and inventory of roadway maintenance materials.
  • Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
  • Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
  • Inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors.
  • Operates light and heavy equipment.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
