About The Position

Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. Essential Duties: Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads and put up warning signs, and organize response of crews. Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments. Inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors. Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets. Monitors materials testing and inventory of roadway maintenance materials. Operates light and heavy equipment. Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.
  • 5 years experience in roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
  • Extensive knowledge of: Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work
  • Extensive knowledge of: The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Extensive knowledge of: Inventory/stock control procedures
  • Extensive knowledge of: Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
  • Expert skill in: Operating light and heavy highway equipment
  • Proficient skill in: Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others
  • Proficient skill in: Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment
  • Proficient skill in: Prioritizing and organizing work assignments
  • Proficient skill in: Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
  • Proficient skill in: Maintaining a safe working environment
  • Exercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; makes decisions that support business objectives and goals
  • Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions.
  • Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
