About The Position

This position performs advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.
  • Transportation Engineer III: 6 YEARS in Transportation engineering or related engineering experience
  • Transportation Engineer IV: 7 YEARS in Transportation engineering or related engineering experience
  • Transportation Engineer V: 8 YEARS in Transportation engineering or related engineering experience
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Licensed Prof Engineer
  • Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.

  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions.

Responsibilities

  • Designs highly complex bridge projects and performs specialized design.
  • Inspects structures for impact damage and construction problems and may design emergency shoring to prevent collapse of damaged structures.
  • Performs inspections, structural evaluations and analyses of bridges and related structures that have appraisal and condition ratings or are recommended for closure.
  • Rates and monitors load carrying capacities of bridges.
  • Recommends bridge replacement, bridge rehabilitation and repair of damaged bridges.
  • Reviews shop drawings prepared by fabricators for bridges and related structures.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
  • Coordinates and monitors consultant contracts related projects.
  • Maintains a critical bridge list and coordinates with the Bridge Division, area engineers and other district staff on critical findings involving state-maintained bridges to have them posted, repaired or closed to the traveling public.
  • Ensures compliance with National Bridge Inspection Standards.
  • Assists district with bridge inspection-related matters.
  • Monitors contract performance, evaluates contract deliverables, reviews billing documentation, monitors the consultant's compliance with the terms of the contract, and prepares and delivers a written evaluation of the consultant's performance.
  • Performs highly complex structural analysis of bridge designs
  • Performs and coordinates the review and processing of Plans, Specifications & Estimates (PS&E) submission, special specifications or special provisions.
  • Performs highly advanced and complex planning work such as plan review, calculations and transportation planning studies.
