About The Position

Transportation Engineer I: Performs transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details. Transportation Engineer II: Performs [complex] transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. [Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor]. Transportation Engineer III: Performs [advanced] and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. [Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence].

Requirements

  • 4 YEARS engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. No supervisory experience required.
  • 5 YEARS engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. No supervisory experience required.
  • 6 YEARS engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. No supervisory experience required.
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Licensed Prof Engineer
  • If performing underwater bridge inspections: Must have Open Water Diver certification.
  • For Bridge Inspection: Must have completed a comprehensive training course based on the Bridge Inspector's Training Manual or NICET Level III or IV certification in Bridge Safety Inspection within (1) year of date of hire.
  • Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.

  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.

Responsibilities

  • Assists Project Managers related to resource assignments, schedules, scope, communication, quality, and/or procurement, while utilizing available resources and maintaining the agency's project objectives.
  • Assists project managers to establish realistic and achievable schedule baselines.
  • Assists with design, computer operations and plan preparation.
  • Assists with the development of design and project development reports, surveys and correspondence.
  • Coordinates phases of preliminary design and revisions in PS&E with districts, divisions, Administration, the FHWA, contractors, fabricators, Corps of Engineers and local entities.
  • Develops and/or reviews engineering related documents, correspondence, reports and remediation plans.
  • Drives/travels to project/work locations to make on-site engineering reviews, analyses, tests and to provide technical support.
  • Interprets maintenance standards, rules, methods, procedures, practices and policies.
  • Interprets manuals and required guidelines for traffic operations.
  • Leads/Trains professional and administrative staff.
  • Makes presentations and represents TxDOT.
  • May serve as a lead worker and the related tasks.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
  • Acts in an advisory capacity on administrative, technical, regulatory and engineering aspects of transportation.
  • Assists in developing and/or monitoring budgets.
  • Develops design and project development reports, surveys and correspondence.
  • Performs complex engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts.
  • Performs complex planning work such as plan review, calculations and assisting in transportation planning studies.
  • Trains engineering staff.
  • Updates, reviews, monitors, and/or reviews requests for changes to plans, manuals and/or standard sheets.
  • Utilizes project management principles in initiating, planning, executing, monitoring, controlling and closing for complex transportation projects.
  • Assesses and reports actual project progress versus planned progress to determine trends and variances for complex projects.
  • Assists Project Managers to establish realistic and achievable schedule baselines for complex projects.
  • Performs advanced and complex engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts.
  • Performs advanced and complex planning work such as plan review, calculations and transportation planning studies.
  • Performs complex hydrologic and hydraulic analysis of structures over waterways and summarizes the analysis in report form
