About The Position

Transportation Engineer I: Performs transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details. Transportation Engineer II: Performs complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. Transportation Engineer III: Performs advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.
  • 4 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
  • 5 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • TX Licensed Prof Engineer
  • If performing underwater bridge inspections: Must have Open Water Diver certification.
  • For Bridge Inspection: Must have completed a comprehensive training course based on the Bridge Inspector's Training Manual or NICET Level III or IV certification in Bridge Safety Inspection within (1) year of date of hire.
  • Considerable knowledge of: Applicable plans, specifications and estimates preparation, review, processing and compliance requirements
  • Considerable knowledge of: Construction engineering policies and procedures
  • Considerable knowledge of: Construction phasing and sequencing
  • Considerable knowledge of: Applicable laws, rules, and regulations

Responsibilities

  • May serve as a lead worker and the related tasks.
  • Monitors consultant design contracts.
  • Monitors consultants' progress and work quality; checks invoices and associated documents; prepares supplemental agreements.
  • Performs engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts.
  • Performs facility engineering work such as layouts, sketches, detailed plans, specifications and estimates.
  • Performs moderately complex structural analysis of bridge designs.
  • Performs planning work such as plan review, calculations and assisting in transportation planning studies.
  • Provides design engineering support for districts in project development.
  • Coordinates with others to develop, monitor and update integrated project plans and schedules to ensure projects are executed in the most efficient manner possible.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
  • Assists with design, computer operations and plan preparation.
  • Coordinates and/or monitors assigned projects/programs/plans.
  • Monitors contractors' compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Performs and coordinates the review and processing of Plans, Specifications & Estimates (PS&E) submission, special specifications or special provisions.
  • Reviews and revises schematics, PS&E, project designs, shop drawings and field changes for traffic control devices, signals, signs, markings, detours, traffic control plans, electrical distribution and roadway lighting and traffic management systems.
  • Reviews, processes and certifies project design plans developed by consulting engineers.
  • Provides design engineering support for districts in project development.
  • Reviews and assists districts with the planning, design of PS&E, and the letting for traffic management systems.
