About The Position

The Transportation Driver plays a vital role in supporting the independence, safety, and well-being of the individuals we serve at Home of Guiding Hands. In this role, you will safely transport clients to and from program sites, medical appointments, community activities, and other destinations, helping ensure each trip is comfortable, reliable, and respectful. Beyond driving, you’ll provide thoughtful assistance to passengers during entry and exit from the vehicle as needed, offering patience, professionalism, and care every step of the way. This position is ideal for someone who values safety, service, and making a meaningful difference in the daily lives of others.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred; or any combination of education, training, and experience demonstrating the ability to perform the duties of the position and safe vehicle operation.
  • Current, valid California Class A or B driver’s license with Passenger Endorsement at the time of appointment and maintained at all times thereafter.
  • Current VDDP Certificate required within 90 days of employment.
  • Medical Card-DL51.
  • Current CPR and First Aid Certification required within 90 days of employment.
  • Drivers are subject to random drug screening as required to comply with CHP and DOT requirements.
  • All drivers are enrolled in the DMV Pull Program.
  • Drive 10+ passenger bus and other automotive vehicles.
  • Ability to operate mechanical lifts, wheelchairs, and adaptive equipment.
  • Ability to operate telephone, cell phone, push-to-talk units, two-way radios, and GPS.
  • Ability to multi-task and establish priorities.
  • Ability to maintain organization in a changing environment.
  • Exhibits initiative, responsibility, flexibility, and leadership.
  • Ability to maintain a flexible attitude and approach toward assignments and successfully operate under ambiguous guidelines.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience providing services to persons with developmental, learning, or physical disabilities preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Completes daily vehicle pre-check inspection, ensuring the vehicle is in safe mechanical condition and required safety equipment, such as first aid kits and fire extinguishers, are available and working, completing documentation as required.
  • Fuels vehicle when necessary.
  • Maintains a clean vehicle.
  • Has a working knowledge of the rules and regulations involved in the safe and efficient operation of automotive equipment.
  • Exercises particular caution when passengers are getting on or off the vehicle.
  • Assists passengers in securing wheelchairs and other mobility devices as trained.
  • Administers first aid to passengers if needed.
  • Reports to Transportation Manager any observations that would affect passengers’ safety or health.
  • Knowledgeable about daily route assignments.
  • Drives program vehicles on assigned routes to transport passengers as trained and expected.
  • Meets route schedules and timelines.
  • Ensures that client care providers, parents, or adult day program staff – and your supervisor – are contacted if passenger(s) will be picked up or dropped off 10 or more minutes later than indicated on route timelines.
  • Maintains accurate documentation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
