About The Position

This position's responsibilities are to assist in the development and implementation of all transportation training programs for new and continuing school bus drivers, bus assistants, and district staff responsible for driving district vehicles or transporting students. This position will evaluate the behind the wheel practices of drivers and the skills of bus assistants.

Requirements

  • Education, training, skills, and experience necessary to carry out the assignment, including completion of state approved driver training course, five (5) years of successful bus driver experience and three (3) years of successful experience as a school bus driver trainer.
  • Skill in operating various models of school buses.
  • Knowledge of safety standards, laws, codes, rules, regulations, policies and procedures regarding pupil transportation.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret road and street maps.
  • Knowledge of the district's streets, highways and boundaries.
  • Skill in effective training techniques.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Demonstrated skill in school bus driving.
  • Ability to observe, monitor and evaluate employee driving performance.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Skill in problem solving.
  • Ability to operate two-way radio.
  • Ability to operate a computer and learn the operation of specific software.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with district staff, parents and the public.
  • Requires fingerprinting and background check to determine that there have been no convictions involving physical molestation, abuse, injury or neglect of a minor.
  • Must complete training in and adhere to district infection control plan.
  • Valid Washington state Class B commercial driver's license with passenger and school bus endorsement with air brake restriction removed.
  • Mandatory drug testing is required.
  • Valid Washington state bus driver trainer certification.
  • Valid first aid and CPR certification.
  • Must meet state mandated requirements for physical strength, ability, hearing capability and visual acuity.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the development and instruction of the driver training programs; conducts classroom and on-site training in compliance with current state regulations and district policies; conducts in-service training for continuing certification of drivers; ensures cross training of drivers with various vehicles and equipment; provides individual training to drivers as needed; maintains training records.
  • Trains, monitors and coaches bus drivers; assesses and corrects bus driver skills; observes driving; discusses bus driving problems and complaints; Assist the manager to maintain, communicate and monitor performance standards; provides input to performance evaluations of drivers, including traffic safety, physical operation, student control, public and student relations; maintains driving and evaluation records.
  • Performs route checks for hazards; checks bus stops for safety and special needs accessibility for special need students.
  • Maintains current knowledge of school bus operation and safety regulations and development; disseminates information; implements changes as required.
  • Assists the manager to coordinate with district personnel on safety matters; investigates bus accidents; maintains liaison with school principals, parents and the public on bus safety, including emergency exit drills and procedures.
  • Drives buses as required to demonstrate or provide backup or relief in emergencies and to maintain proficiency.
  • May serve on various district committees and/or departmental work teams. Models appropriate and cooperative behavior, including protecting confidential information, consistent with district ethical guidelines.
  • Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position as directed.
