About The Position

Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. Essential Duties: Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads and put up warning signs and organize response of crews. Assists in administration of the maintenance section. Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments. Inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors. Inspects work performed by maintenance contractors. Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets. Operates light and heavy equipment. Oversees the work of designated maintenance inspectors and sign technicians. Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment.

Requirements

  • High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.
  • 5 years experience in roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with "N" Tank endorsement.
  • Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Incident management procedures

  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
  • Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others

  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour.
  • Subject to atmospheric conditions-fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation.
  • Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist.
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc.
  • Crouching-bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine.
  • Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another.
  • Talking expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words.
  • Pulling-using upper extremities to exert force moving objects in a sustained motion.
  • Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment.
  • Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
  • Required to work weekends and holidays.
  • Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.
  • Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.
  • A mathematical simulation will be part of the interview process.
