About The Position

Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Requirements

  • High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.
  • 5 years experience in roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with "N" endorsement at time of application.
  • Methods, procedures, equipment and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work.
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Incident management procedures
  • Inventory/stock control procedures
  • Performing calculations to include material and labor estimates, expenses, technical survey data and engineering calculations
  • Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
  • Maintaining a safe working environment
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Delegates both routine and important tasks and decisions, shares authority but has ultimate accountability
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
  • Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
  • Required to work weekends and holidays.
  • Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.
  • Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Assist during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads and put up warning signs, and organize response of crews.
  • Assists in administration of the maintenance section.
  • Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignements.
  • Inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors.
  • Inspects work performed by maintenance contractors.
  • Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
  • Operates light and heavy equipment.
  • Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment.
  • Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resources for complex questions and trouble shooting of problems; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members' career conversations and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
