About The Position

As a Transmission Design Engineer, you will have the unique opportunity to design and execute planned capital transmission improvements for Portland General Electric. You will apply your engineering expertise to develop designs for overhead and underground distribution and transmission line projects ranging from 12.5 kV to 500 kV, contributing to PGE's mission of providing clean, reliable energy. A successful candidate will plan and implement the design, procurement, construction and/or maintenance of electric transmission and distribution lines, including conductor systems, hardware, structures and foundations, for the transmission and distribution of electric power. You will also provide transmission and distribution project management expertise resulting in cost effective, reliable and workable construction designs and customer connections as well as provide technical engineering support for transmission and distribution construction and maintenance projects. In this role you will develop designs for new overhead transmission facilities as well as upgrades and maintenance of existing facilities and provide technical support to construction crews in the field. This role offers exciting challenges in shaping the future of Oregon's energy infrastructure, allowing you to work supporting the design of transmission projects while making a tangible impact on the region's power network. This position is open to both a p2 level or a Senior p3 level. The level will be determined based on the successful applicant’s qualification, experience, and demonstrated skills during the interview process. See determining qualifications below.

Requirements

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in engineering. ABET accredited engineering program or program accredited by an equivalent agency preferred.
  • P2 level Typically two or more years in engineering.
  • Senior, p3 level: Typically five or more years in engineering, or four or more years in related field with PE license.
  • P2: Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam strongly preferred; may be required based upon role.
  • P3: Professional Engineering (PE) license strongly preferred; may be required based upon role.
  • Valid Drivers License required for both levels
  • Intermediate knowledge of engineering and economic principles and concepts.
  • Intermediate knowledge of other engineering disciplines and intermediate ability to interpret engineering deliverable content as assigned.
  • Intermediate knowledge and application of engineering processes and procedures.
  • Intermediate industry knowledge and technology trends.
  • Intermediate knowledge of company QA/QC process and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of construction feasibility.
  • Working knowledge of procurement and contract administration.

Nice To Haves

  • Prefer Civil experience with structures and foundations.
  • Experience using PLS-CADD and PLS-Pole.
  • Experience with PLS-Tower, AutoCAD and LPILE a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains currency in state-of-the-art engineering practices and independently applies professional knowledge of engineering processes and standards to assignments/projects.
  • Leverages knowledge across design software, LiDAR, infrared cameras, UV cameras, etc. to enhance workflow efficiency; applies engineering theories and concepts to enhance engineering proficiency and technical knowledge of distribution design techniques, applicable codes, and regulations.
  • Prepares a variety of moderately complex engineering deliverables.
  • Provides engineering designs for overhead and underground distribution and transmission line projects ranging from 12.5 kV to 500 kV; evaluates possible alternatives to meet project requirements, including line routing, site preparation, facility siting, conduit design, structure design, foundation design, specifications and material orders.
  • Assigns tasks and coordinates with other internal/external team members on assigned projects; shares information and provides professional guidance in executing project tasks.
  • Independently contributes to the design and analysis of transmission and distribution projects (from 12.5 kV to 500 kV), both capital and maintenance, including the development of plans, specifications, estimates and schedules; completes initial scoping and preliminary design through construction and as-built documentation.
  • Shares current knowledge of latest technology and processes; may assist with mentoring, recognition, and any corrective actions required.
  • Maintains currency in state-of-the art engineering practices and provides guidance and direction to colleagues on engineering processes and standards when requested.
  • Reviews the work of transmission designers and less experienced engineers with regard to PGE standards, applicable codes and construction processes.
  • Prepares a variety of complex engineering deliverables for larger or multiple projects; coordinates multiple discipline activity.
  • Provides transmission engineering and design guidance for transmission line projects ranging from 57 kV to 500 kV; evaluates possible alternatives to meet major project requirements, including site preparation, foundation design, structure design, specifications and material orders.
  • Actively coordinates with other internal/external team members on moderately complex projects, including representing the team to interdepartmental stakeholders.
  • Identifies requirements, initiates work orders and tracks expenditures to implement capital and maintenance projects; independently contributes to the design and analysis of transmission and distribution projects (from 12.5 kV to 500 kV), both capital and maintenance, including the development of plans, specifications, estimates and schedules; completes initial scoping and preliminary design through construction and as-built documentation.
  • Serves as a technical specialist and provides consultation/guidance to project teams in a particular practice area; actively fosters knowledge management and provides mentoring; implements resource management strategy.
