About The Position

Dorchester County Public Schools is currently accepting applications for Translators / Interpreters . Responsible for facilitating cross-cultural communication through the process of converting one language into a different language to ensure meaningful and accurate communication between two parties who do not speak the same language. Please note that translators/interpreter hours will vary and be on an as needed basis.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or G.E.D. certificate
• Outstanding customer service.
• Must be able to travel to different schools around the county.
• Excellent listening, verbal, and written language skills for both English and another language.
• Ability to accurately interpret conversation and presentation.
• Knowledge of advanced grammar and usage in both languages.
• Knowledge of school system terminology.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
• Ability to effectively communicate with diverse communities and develop outreach strategies to encourage parental involvement in student learning.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively and engage diverse parents/guardians with varied communication styles, levels of skill and experience to support their child’s education experience.
• Ability to employ a variety of teaching styles to response to the needs of diverse learners.
• Ability to employ business technology tools.

Responsibilities

• Provides consecutive interpretation services at one-on-one or small group meetings.
• Provides simultaneous interpretation service at larger meetings or when requested at small group meetings.
• Sight translates documents upon request during meetings.
• Makes phone calls to families who speak languages other than English.
• Maintains interpreter ethics at all times.
• Researches relevant issues and technical terms as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
