About The Position

Lead from the field. Support operators. Keep the system moving. If you’ve worked in transportation you know that great service doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when operators are supported, standards are clear, and leadership shows up where the work actually happens. TCAT is looking for a Transit Service Supervisor who understands transit operations, respects the collective bargaining process, and knows how to coach, mentor, and hold people accountable in a fair and consistent way. This is a hands‑on, field‑focused role for someone who leads by example and takes pride in safe, reliable public transportation. What You’ll Do As a Transit Service Supervisor, you’ll be a visible, trusted presence for Bus Operators—on the road, on the radio, and in real time when issues arise.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid CDL‑B license (or ability to obtain within 6 months)
  • 1–2 years of supervisory experience (unionized workplace experience strongly preferred)
  • Strong communication skills—verbal and written
  • Sound judgment in safety‑sensitive, fast‑moving situations
  • Comfort with Microsoft Office and evolving technology
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to maintain a flexible schedule and serve on‑call as needed
  • Ability to pass required drug and alcohol screening

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s degree or technical training
  • 1–2 years of transit workplace experience
  • NYS Article 19‑A Examiner Certification (or ability to obtain within 6 months)

Responsibilities

  • Supervise & Support Bus Operators
  • Monitor route, schedule, and operating procedure compliance
  • Apply the collective bargaining agreement in daily operations
  • Conduct performance evaluations and issue recognition or discipline
  • Maintain operator records and oversee NYS 19‑A compliance
  • Coach operators on safety, driving practices, customer service, farebox use, and data collection systems
  • Ensure Service Quality, Safety & Compliance
  • Perform on‑the‑street supervision and resolve issues as they happen
  • Serve as a liaison between operators, maintenance, dispatch, and safety staff
  • Ensure ADA compliance and uphold all applicable DOT, DMV, FMCSA, and TCAT safety policies
  • Monitor radio communications and respond to urgent operational concerns
  • Coordinate detours, service changes, and emergency responses
  • Investigate accidents and incidents, work with first responders, and document findings
  • Respond to passenger complaints and conduct instructional ride‑alongs when needed
  • Support service during inclement weather, special events, and system disruptions
  • Be a Reliable Operational Leader
  • Work a flexible schedule and be willing to adjust work hours
  • Provide on-call and backup coverage for other supervisors and dispatch
  • Assist with schedule changes and service revisions
  • Coordinate with out‑of‑county transit providers during emergencies
  • Maintain accurate daily logs and reports for Operations leadership
  • Support special events like Cornell Commencement and community festivals
