About The Position

Trainmasters operate, maintain, and repair various components of a large-scale model of the city within the Cincinnati In Motion exhibit. This model includes up to 20 electric trains, 8 streetcars, and 4 inclines that share 50 years of Cincinnati history. This position works to care for the exhibit through proper operating techniques and repairing locomotives, rolling stock, as well as associated electrical and mechanical components. This position also creates a fun and engaging environment by interpreting the model and sharing their knowledge of the model trains and the history of the city with guests.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • 1-2 years’ experience with basic tools such as hand or power drill, hand saw, pliers, scale rule.
  • Interest, knowledge of and/or previous experience with modeling and model railroading preferred.
  • Basic electrical skills, mechanical and/or engineering knowledge and model-building skills desired.
  • Must be able to multi-task, prioritize creative problem solving.
  • Must have good communication and interpersonal skills and be willing to work with a diverse group of people.
  • Self-motivated and able to work without close supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to differentiate between different gauges and scales among the model.
  • Ability to communicate knowledge of the model and its components to the public in an informative and engaging way.
  • Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to crawl under or walk on top of model layout with tight spaces.
  • Time is spent working on the exhibit floor maintaining the model while the museum is open to the public and repairing components in a workshop setting.

Nice To Haves

  • Technical degree or working toward technical certification a plus.
  • Experience with scenery molding and construction, model layout, basic building and design a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Daily operation of exhibit includes start up, shut down and monitoring to ensure smooth operation of exhibit.
  • Troubleshoot and repair model locomotives, including basic electrical work and small motor repair.
  • Contribute to the cleanliness of model train components, track, and overall model
  • Engage with the public as an exhibit interpreter answering questions and highlighting areas of special interest.
