About The Position

The Trainmaster position is responsible for supervising and overseeing the hiring and ongoing development of Operations staff, ensuring that Operating employees receive appropriate and continued training/certifications and that all crew members are proficient in their duties, compliant with operating rules and that they follow safe, company-sanctioned operating practices. The Trainmaster will also take a leading role in overseeing multiple aspects of daily train operation and railroad-wide preparedness planning- often serving as a liaison between the Operations, Reservations, Mechanical and MOW departments, and others as needed. This position suits someone with railroad operations experience (ideally as a conductor, engineer, or similar), strong leadership and soft skills, and a passion for historic railroading in a tourist-focused operation. It's demanding but rewarding, emphasizing safety, team development, and keeping the railroad running smoothly.

Requirements

  • Comprehensive understanding of railroad operating rules and practices.
  • 3-5 years experience in railroad operations as a trainman, engineman or supervisor required.
  • Proven leadership in fast-paced environments.
  • Strong emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, empathy, and objectivity.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Outlook, Excel, Word).
  • Excellent multitasking, prioritization, organization, and communication skills (from staff to senior management).
  • Valid driver's license and clean motor vehicle report.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug test and ongoing random and post accident drug testing if applicable.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment and ongoing Physical Capabilities Evaluations.
  • Physical demands: Lift 50 lbs, bend/stoop/climb, walk long distances; work outdoors in extreme weather (heat, cold, snow, ice); exposure to loud noises and heavy equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • Incident investigation experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and develop Operations staff (Trainmen and Enginemen), including hiring, career progression, and promotions to Conductor/Engineer.
  • Develop and deliver training programs and qualifications for operating employees.
  • Ensure compliance with operating rules, safety practices, and company policies through onboard observations, rules testing, and ride-alongs with crews.
  • Coordinate between departments (Operations, Reservations, Mechanical, Maintenance of Way) and act as a liaison.
  • Handle administrative tasks including scheduling, time approvals, incident/injury investigations, and reporting.
  • Participate in safety meetings, briefings, and risk reduction efforts.
  • Cover shifts (trainman/engineman) when needed, respond to issues promptly, and handle MOD (Manager on Duty) duties on weekends and holidays.
  • Manage interpersonal conflicts, employee issues, and passenger complications with emotional intelligence, fairness, confidentiality, and leadership.
  • Other duties as assigned.
