About The Position

Through the Department of War (DoW) SkillBridge Program, GDIT offers transitioning service members the opportunity to gain hands-on training and professional experience as a Training Specialist Fellow, supporting the Military Education Program at Naval Station Great Lakes, IL. In this Fellowship, participants will observe and participate in real-world Navy technical training operations, gaining exposure to the instructional content, methods, and assessment practices outlined in the ILARTS Instructor position description. The Training Specialist Fellow will work alongside certified ILARTS instructors and training staff within a multi-instructor workforce delivering electronics and video systems instruction. This Fellowship is designed to prepare participants for a successful transition into civilian training specialist or technical instructor roles by developing familiarity with the technical subject matter, instructional methodologies, and training environment required of an ILARTS Instructor. As a Training Specialist Fellow, you will train under the guidance of experienced instructors and the Instructor Leader to develop foundational instructional support skills. Throughout the Fellowship, you will gain experience learning how ILARTS courses are delivered using approved curricula, instructional methods, and assessment standards, consistent with the requirements of the ILARTS Instructor role.

Requirements

  • Prior military experience in electronics, communications, or related technical fields.
  • Exposure to Navy training environments, instructional support, or mentorship roles preferred.
  • Experience working with electronic systems, test equipment, or maintenance activities desired.
  • Foundational knowledge of electronics topics reflected in the ILARTS Instructor position description.
  • Familiarity with electronic test equipment and systematic troubleshooting concepts.
  • Ability to learn and support formal instructional methods, assessments, and safety practices.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to support both classroom and laboratory instruction.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multi-instructor training team.
  • NEC 9502/805A preferred, or willingness to pursue qualification consistent with ILARTS Instructor requirements.
  • On-site attendance required at Naval Station Great Lakes, IL, consistent with ILARTS training operations.
  • Fellowship duration and schedule aligned with SkillBridge program and training leadership requirements.
  • Has served at least 180 days on active duty
  • Can participate within the last 6 months of separation or retirement
  • Will receive an honorable discharge
  • Has taken any service TAP/TGPS
  • Has attended or participated in an ethics brief within the last 12 months
  • Received Unit Commander (first O-4/Field Grade commander in chain of command) written authorization and approval to participate in DoW SkillBridge Program prior to start of the fellowship.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related technical discipline preferred, or equivalent combination of education, technical certifications, training, or military experience, consistent with ILARTS Instructor qualification pathways.
  • Master Training Specialist designation is a plus but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Observing and supporting classroom and laboratory instruction conducted in accordance with ILARTS Instructor methods, including lecture, audiovisual materials, discussion, laboratory, and practical exercises.
  • Assisting instructors in the delivery of course content aligned to ILARTS subject areas, including DC electricity, AC electricity, semiconductor components and circuits, television and video theory, and digital logic.
  • Supporting instruction related to AC/DC circuit analysis, series and parallel circuits, RC, RL, and RLC circuits, schematic diagram interpretation, and electrical safety.
  • Assisting with laboratory activities involving electronic test equipment, troubleshooting of electrical and electronic circuits, and corrective maintenance demonstrations.
  • Supporting training activities related to closed circuit television systems, including video cameras, monitors, recorders, transmission lines, and video system troubleshooting.
  • Observing and assisting with instruction on digital systems, including logic gates, combinational circuits, number systems, registers, switching, and timing circuits.
  • Assisting with student assessments, including examinations and performance tests, under direct instructor supervision.
  • Observing and applying safety precautions and training standards required in the ILARTS instructional environment.
  • Supporting setup, operation, maintenance, and teardown of instructional laboratories and training equipment.
  • Assisting with curriculum support, instructional materials preparation, and special training projects as assigned by the Instructor Leader.
