About The Position

The primary responsibility of the Train Inspector is to perform all exterior inspections railcars for possible animal and plant pests and debris collectively referred to as regulated garbage. The inspector will be handling regulated garbage which includes collection, identification, and separation from non-regulated garbage, transportation, and storage, to the final disposition of the regulated garbage outlined in the compliance agreement with minimal supervision. Work is of a physical nature and involves kneeling, bending, and stooping.

Requirements

  • This position is subject to a pre-employment background investigation.
  • Valid driver license required.
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen.
  • Must meet all physical requirements and be able to take direction.
  • Required to wear gloves, eye and ear protection, hard hat, lace up steel toe work boots, and other necessary safety equipment as tasks dictate.
  • Required to have high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate English fluently and professionally.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with and present information to all levels of employees, contractors, vendors, partners, owners and other inter-company divisions.
  • Requires basic analytical and quantitative skills with the ability to solve basic mathematical problems.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  • Constant need (80% to 100% of the time) to be on feet.
  • Have constant need (80% to 100% of the time) to perform the following physical activities: o Bend/Stoop/Squat/Kneel Pick up debris, etc. o Climb Stairs or ladder Routine duties require access to all levels of railcars. o Push or Pull Move equipment, open and close doors, etc. o Reach Above Shoulder Stock and remove files, parts, and or equipment. o Grasp/Grip/Turning Handle tools and equipment, etc. o Finger Dexterity Handle tools and equipment, type, etc.
  • Reliable transportation is required at all times.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license at all times.
  • Constant need (80% to 100% of the time) to observe areas needing attention/correction. Read cautionary labels; respond to written instructions from staff.
  • Constant need (80% to 100% of the time) to see things clearly beyond arm’s reach. Observe and assist in general maintenance; observe problems throughout property.
  • Constant need (80% to 100% of the time) to be able to differentiate common railroad signaling colors (red, green, yellow and blue).
  • Essential. Must be able (80% to 100% of the time) to hear things clearly and be able to receive verbal instructions.
  • Constant need (80% to 100% of the time) to verbally communicate with the staff, partners, vendors, etc.
  • HIGH. Must be able to apply principles of logical thinking to a variety of practical situations and accurately follow standardized procedures that may occasionally involve minor deviations. Needs ability to think rationally beyond a specific set of instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct all business in accordance with company policies and procedures, railroad policies and safety procedures, state and federal laws; e.g., OSHA, ADA, etc.
  • Ensure that all work is done in a safe manner and that all safety rules take precedence over any other work. It is you responsibility to maintain a safe working environment for you and all employees. This includes identifying safety hazards, avoiding unsafe work, and problem solving.
  • Practice safe work habits – understand and follow company and industry safety rules, practices, and procedures, wear prescribed safety apparel; take appropriate action when conditions threaten safety of self or coworkers; ensure equipment and work area are in safe operating condition before starting work.
  • Assist Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and USDA APHIS when necessary.
  • Counting railcars coming into United States on each train for accurate reporting and billing.
  • Report all work performed on proper billing sheets accurately.
  • Record keeping for collection, cleaning and disinfection, and/or storage of regulated garbage.
  • Identify and report damages on railcars.
  • Ability to perform all site specific equipment inspections (documented) and ensure all equipment is kept clean and in good repair.
  • Keep storage and company vehicles (trucks, ATVs, Gators) neat and orderly.
  • Maintain good working relationships with our customers, service partners and Harbor management.
  • Participate in weekly, monthly, and all Safety Meetings.
  • Adhere to and support all company policies.
  • Communicate regularly with supervisors to ensure that objectives are being met.
  • Ensures that storage areas always remain locked when not in use.
  • Performs any and all additional duties assigned by management.
