The Trails Technical Training Instructors will be primarily responsible for coordinating and leading volunteer trail workdays and trail skills training workshops, as well as advertising these events through community outreach. The successful candidate will be comfortable working outdoors, interacting with people of diverse backgrounds, and serving in a leadership role. This is a field-based role, and work will take place at multiple outdoor locations within the city of Philadelphia. The Trails Technical Training Instructors will report to AMC’s Mid-Atlantic Trail Program Manager, who is also based in Philadelphia. The successful candidates will be required to attend AMC’s 2-week spring leadership training in Massachusetts beginning April 6, 2026 which will cover training in outdoor leadership, safety, and other technical trail topics (travel & lodging provided).

Requirements

  • At least one year of experience in trail or land stewardship, recreation and/or volunteer organizing, or a combination of professional experience and education
  • Experience using hand tools to build or maintain trails
  • Strong understanding of sustainable trail building and maintenance techniques
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision to execute tasks and projects
  • Ability to lead volunteers of all ages, backgrounds, and experience levels
  • Public speaking & leadership skills
  • Ability to safely operate a pickup truck and enclosed trailer

Nice To Haves

  • Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certification preferred

Responsibilities

  • Lead volunteer work days from start to finish (site prep, tools & materials prep, volunteer sign-in, instructing volunteers in safe use of tools and equipment, delegating work tasks, leading wrap-up discussions, post-work day clean-up and reporting)
  • Lead trail skills training workshops for volunteers (topics may include corridor clearing, drain cleaning, de-berming, and other entry-level trail skills)
  • Engage community members through tabling events and other community events to advertise volunteer opportunities
  • Create and foster an inclusive group culture and learning environment among participants and co-workers
  • Prioritize safety and manage risk of participants in outdoor settings, assessing both environmental and human risk and making decisions that benefit both the group and individual experience
  • Maintain a clean & organized tool cache, perform basic tool maintenance
  • Assist with coordinating and scheduling work days and training workshops
  • Drive a pickup truck & enclosed trailer to various work sites throughout Philadelphia
  • Attend AMC Trail Department’s 2-week spring leadership training in Massachusetts
  • Other duties as assigned
