About The Position

This person is responsible to assist in leading and directing a crew managing trails, performing tree care and removal in the County Park system. This person and the crew they lead is responsible for tree care and removal as part of Facilities Management operations and support services for other County agencies as required, while providing a clean and safe environment for visitors, tenants and employees. The employee in this position is classified as an essential employee and may be required to work when the County offices are officially closed due to inclement weather, natural disaster, other emergency situations, etc. Weekend/Holiday work, as required. Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • One year experience or internship with a commercial arboriculture or Park-related industry
  • Applicant must have basic computer skills that include using email, navigating the internet, creating spreadsheets and documents
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions
  • Ability to work well with minimum supervision, self-motivated
  • Ability to work well alone and with others
  • Ability to assist Supervisor in his/her absence
  • Must possess International Society of Arboriculture Arborist Certification or ability to achieve one within one year
  • Must have and maintain a valid PA Driver's License with an acceptable driving record in accordance with County policy and submit to a driving record background check
  • Must pass a pre-employment fingerprint-based background check
  • Must pass a pre-employment ChildLine Safety background check
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screening

Nice To Haves

  • B.S. in Forest Science, Urban Forestry, or related field preferred
  • PA Dept of Agriculture Core Applicator Certification and PA Dept of Ag Category 23 Applicator Certification is preferred or ability to achieve both within six months of employment

Responsibilities

  • Assists with tree care and removal on all County owned properties, includes tree climbing, pruning and removal in accordance with current A.N.S.I. standards
  • Assists with trail maintenance on all County Park trails
  • Assists with maintenance and minor repairs to County owned bridges
  • Operates equipment including bucket truck, chipper, stump grinder, backhoe, skid loader, ToolCat, small dump truck and snowplow
  • Operates hand, power, and rotary tools (i.e., chainsaw, power pruner, weed whacker, handsaw, pruner, leaf blower, jackhammer etc.)
  • Regularly provides field progress to Trails/Arborist Supervisor and Grounds Superintendent
  • Safely operate a pickup truck (with or without trailer) / equipment
  • Ability to follow County and Departmental Policies and Procedures
  • Provides job safety orientation, instruction, and monitoring
  • Works cooperatively with Facility Management staff on major projects
  • Responds to maintenance emergencies such as downed trees, flooding, and snow events
  • Oversees and performs basic equipment and vehicle maintenance and repairs
  • Ability to operate a computer to navigate the internet and use Windows platform (Outlook, Excel, Word)
  • Creates, sends, receives, reads, and responds to email
  • Works with a computer-based work order system to track tasks
  • Assists with grounds maintenance and sanitation, as needed, including special events, loading, and hauling trash and recyclables, and janitorial duties
  • Performs other duties as required
