About The Position

The Trailer Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing company and customer trailers to ensure they are safe, roadworthy, and compliant with DOT and company standards. This role supports Bengal's transportation operations by minimizing downtime and ensuring equipment reliability.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Prior experience as a trailer, truck, diesel, or heavy equipment mechanic, or equivalent mechanical experience.
  • Working knowledge of trailer systems including brakes, suspension, electrical, and structural components.
  • Proficiency with common hand tools, power tools, jacks, and lifting equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret work orders, inspection forms, and basic technical information.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record; CDL preferred but not required.
  • Ability to meet physical demands including standing, bending, kneeling, climbing, and lifting regularly.

Nice To Haves

  • Formal training or certification in diesel/truck or trailer repair from a technical school.
  • Experience performing DOT trailer inspections and familiarity with FHWA / out of service criteria.
  • Welding and fabrication experience (steel and/or aluminum).
  • Experience with hydraulic liftgates or specialized trailer equipment (if applicable to your fleet).

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance on dry van, flatbed, and other types of semi trailers in accordance with DOT and company guidelines.
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, air, and structural issues on trailers using both visual inspection and basic diagnostic tools.
  • Repair or replace components including brakes, drums, hubs, bearings, seals, air lines, suspension components, landing gear, doors, roofs, and flooring.
  • Inspect, test, and repair 12 volt electrical and ABS brake systems, including lights, wiring, and connectors.
  • Perform tire-related work such as replacement, repair, rotation, and proper torqueing of wheels.
  • Complete DOT inspections and verify that trailers meet all applicable safety and roadworthiness standards.
  • Conduct minor welding and fabrication to repair cracks, patch floors/roofs, or reinforce structural areas, if qualified.
  • Document all work performed, parts used, and time spent in work orders or maintenance software accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Communicate equipment status, repair needs, and safety concerns to the Shop Foreman/Maintenance Manager.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area; follow all company safety policies and use required PPE.
  • Assist other technicians as needed and support shop housekeeping and inventory efforts.
