About The Position

Under general supervision, performs skilled technical work in the installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic signal control devices. Work involves installing traffic signal equipment; troubleshooting problems; adjusting and repairing equipment, supervise subordinate staff; and responding to inquiries. Employee works according to some procedures and decides how and when to do tasks. Work also involves responding to emergency repair calls on a 24 hour basis. Employee is responsible for responding to emergency repair calls in adverse weather conditions. Reports to the Traffic Signals System Superintendent. Requirements

  • Graduation from high school supplemented by vocational course work in electronics or electrical repair, 1 to 2 years of experience in the maintenance, and repair of electrical and electronic control devices desirable; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
  • Requires a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License within 90 days of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Journeyman level Electrician is desirable.
  • Must be certified by IMSA as a Traffic Signal Technician, Level II (or certifiable within 24 months of employment).
  • Must possess a valid commercial driver's license or be able to obtain within 90 days of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Installs and inspects traffic signal equipment, including underground wiring control boxes, signal heads, and traffic counters; trains in use of equipment, as time and workload permits.
  • May supervise department employees which involves such duties as instructing, assigning and reviewing work, maintaining standards, acting on employee problems, selecting new employees, appraising employee performance, recommending promotions, discipline, termination and salary increases.
  • Trains in the use of various equipment.
  • Troubleshoots problems with related equipment in order to determine procedures for repair.
  • Adjusts, replaces, cleans, and/or repairs traffic signal equipment.
  • Supervises and assigns subordinate staff.
  • Responds to inquiries, complaints, or concerns about traffic signaling.
  • Installs new traffic signal equipment; sets poles and concrete forms.
  • Prepares reports on repair and maintenance work completed.
  • Ensures equipment meets given codes and guidelines.
  • Receives and/or reviews various records and reports including maintenance and repair report, plans for signals, and wiring diagrams.
  • Prepares and/or processes various records and reports including equipment inspection report, activity report, time and attendance record, and job progress reports.
  • Refers to Traffic Manual (MUTCD), electronic equipment schematics, supplemental MUTCD, manufacturers' manual, etc.
  • Operates a variety of equipment such as computer, controller test equipment, voltmeter/Ohmmeter/ammeter, master traffic control panels, signal generator/oscilloscope, hand tools, etc.
  • Uses a variety of tools such as diagnostic equipment, hand tools, safety equipment, etc.; and a variety of supplies such as wire/suspension cable, control cabinets/signal heads, testing materials, replacement parts, etc. Uses a variety of computer software such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, City data system, Circuit Analysis, etc.
  • Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals including Traffic Signal System Superintendent, subordinates, contractors, and the general public.
  • Monitors and makes adjustments to traffic control systems through a general computer.
  • Installs, repairs and/or replaces computer network equipment to include fiber optics, network switches, wireless systems and Ethernet systems.
  • Transports and delivers equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Interacts with citizen, groups, and emergency services.
  • Assists with other departments (Police, Fire, etc.)
  • Performs other related duties as required.
