About The Position

The Signal Technician will construct, install, test, inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain traffic signals, school zone flashers, and streetlights. This role assists with setting up controllers and installing vehicle detection systems, communication equipment, and other traffic signal equipment. The technician also assists with signs and markings responsibilities, performing work related to the installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic control signs, pavement markings, sign fabrication, guardrail, and permanent barricades. This position involves operating a variety of light and heavy equipment, hand, and power tools. Requirements

  • Operating and maintaining applicable vehicles, equipment, and tools of assigned area.
  • Providing repairs and maintenance work.
  • Troubleshooting, diagnosing and analyzing issues.
  • Identifying and implementing solutions.
  • Prepare reports, logs and activity documentation.
  • Ability to work independently and/or in a team environment and able to exercise good judgment.
  • Knowledge of Traffic Control and Work Zone standards.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Three (3) years of experience related to area of assignment.
  • IMSA Work Zone Safety or ability to obtain within 6 months of date of hire (TEEX course certification will be considered).
  • IMSA Level I Certification in Traffic Signals or the ability to obtain within 12 months of date of hire (TEEX course certifications will be considered).
  • Valid Texas Driver's License Class – C.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain vehicles and various light equipment and tools.
  • Install, maintain and inspect street signs, traffic signals and streetlights.
  • Remove, measure, layout and paint pavement markings – thermoplastic.
  • Maintain and repair street pavement and asphalt.
  • Secure work areas with traffic signs, cones and barricades, direct traffic around work areas as necessary.
  • Maintain and paint stop bars.
  • Perform maintenance of faded signs and alternating flags and banners around the city.
  • Work weekends or after hours to support traffic management and operations for special events or emergency situations, as required.
  • Assist with setting up traffic control or detours necessary for special events and emergency situations, as required.
  • Work overnight shifts for the installation of pavement markings, as required.
  • Provide backup assistance, on-call coverage and support to other City departments assigned.
  • Travel to work sites, and to attend meetings, conferences, and training.
  • Perform thorough inspections of traffic signs to ensure compliance with current federal, state, and local standards, evaluating sign condition, placement, and visibility.
  • Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance on equipment, promptly identifying and reporting malfunctions. Ensure equipment is clean, operational, and safe for daily use.
  • Ensure that safety apparel is always worn and that safety rules and regulations are followed.
  • Be subject to 24-hour recall, including working overtime during emergency situations (defined as any natural or man-made disaster that may or may not necessitate the relocation of City personnel or citizens). In the event of an emergency and/or a required evacuation, the incumbent may be required to remain at work to provide needed services or perform essential duties for the benefit of the general public including services or duties different from those performed in the normal course and scope of the position.
  • Work on-call and overtime as required once becoming IMSA Traffic Signal Level I Certified.
  • Maintain regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours.
