About The Position

Pima County Department of Transportation is seeking a Traffic Signal Technician I in the Planning & Engineering Division. This position provides a great opportunity to gain experience in a specialized trade that allows for future growth of skills and knowledge in a range of industries from electrical, electronics, solar power, and more! This position installs, maintains, and repairs traffic signals, street lighting, other electrical and electronic traffic control devices, and related equipment in the shop and at field locations. Position will work four, ten-hour shifts Monday-Thursday, 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Periodic on-call overtime is required (nights, weekends and holidays). Position requires a valid Arizona class A or B commercial driver's license (CDL) within the first six months of appointment.

Requirements

  • Five (5) years of journey-level experience in the field of electrical or electronic construction, maintenance, and/or repair of electrical or electronic systems.
  • Relevant education from an accredited college, trade school, or industry recognized apprenticeship program may substitute for up to three years of aforementioned experience.
  • Valid driver license is required at time of application
  • Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment.
  • All positions require a valid Arizona Class D driver license at the time of application.
  • All positions require a valid Arizona class A or B commercial driver license (CDL) within six months of appointment.

Nice To Haves

  • Maintenance and/or construction experience with traffic signal and lighting devices and equipment.
  • Experience in the maintenance and repair of electronic and/or electrical systems equipment.
  • Experience reading and interpreting electrical blueprint drawings and technical electrical diagrams.
  • Experience maintaining and/or constructing electrical systems and equipment with nominal voltage ranges of 120, 240, and 480 volts.
  • Experience using computers to document work related activities using word processing, database and email programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, maintains, repairs, and inspects the construction of traffic signals, streetlights, permanent traffic counting stations, aviation communication and navigational electrical devices, and other electrical devices
  • Installs, maintains and repairs microprocessor-based solid state digital and analog traffic signal control and detection equipment including loop detector amplifiers, conflict monitors, traffic counters, microcomputers, traffic signal controllers, load switching devices and other electronic devices
  • Operates test equipment to identify and isolate electronic malfunctions in the shop and at field locations
  • Assembles and/or modifies traffic signal controllers, tests and diagnoses electronic equipment
  • Performs scheduled inspections and preventative maintenance on traffic-related electrical and electronic equipment
  • Performs emergency diagnosis and repairs on a rotating, on-call basis, which may require the repair of electrical traffic control equipment, the removal and installation of electronic control cabinet components (such as controllers, conflict monitors and load switches), using an aerial lift truck to work at heights of 50 feet, and may require working in adverse weather conditions
  • Identifies high voltage hazards within the work zone and complete work safely maintaining a safe working distance per industry standards
  • Drives and operates aerial lift trucks to maintain and repair transportation related electrical devices
  • Reviews and interprets approved construction plans and electrical schematics as a basis for conducting inspection or installation activities for traffic control devices to ensure compliance with appropriate specifications and standards
  • Meets with representatives of contractors, utility companies and appropriate County staff to ensure coordinated work efforts or to resolve problems
  • Prepares electronic and wiring schematics
  • Maintains inventory records, determines equipment and material needs, and recommends or purchases required items
  • Maintains temporary traffic control devices while working within active roadways to ensure compliance with traffic safety regulations
  • Maintains daily records of work performed and compiles construction project documentation
  • Uses a computer to log and track work performed and to install, update, or configure software modules on equipment.
