About The Position

We are seeking a Traffic Management Specialist at the Traffic Operations Center based out of Grand Rapids, MI. This role will be full-time and involves managing traffic congestion, planned events, and unplanned incidents in a Traffic Operations Center and providing data entry and QA/QC for information in the State DOT Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS). The Traffic Management Center is a 24/7 facility, interested candidates must have flexibility to work various shifts and on holidays and weekends. Candidates interested must be able to work any shift (first, second or third). The training will take between 6 to 8 weeks to be completed, and it will be administered during the first and second shifts between the hours of 6:00am-8:00pm. Your role includes tracking identified incidents in software, notifying appropriate personnel, and providing additional responses as required. You will actively implement traffic management through the use of software to relieve congestion and activate alerts to the public for construction events, Amber Alerts, and incidents as appropriate. The role also involves receiving and responding to emails and phone calls or redirecting them to appropriate staff as necessary, coordinating with other agencies and law enforcement, and researching, identifying, and reviewing planned construction, maintenance, and special events and activities. Additionally, you will assist with data collection for monthly reports, incident reports, and any other requested reports, and perform other assignments as the Supervisor may deem necessary from time to time.

Requirements

  • High school diploma (or equivalent)
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check.
  • Physically able to work in an office environment performing various functions including computer work, answering phones and sitting for long periods of time.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in stressful situations with a team.
  • Ability to work varying schedules to meet the needs of a 24/7/365 operations center.
  • Proficient skills working with Microsoft office suite programs (Word, Excel and Outlook)
  • Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.

Nice To Haves

  • Related experience in dispatch center, call center or comparable relevant experience is preferred.
  • Geographic knowledge of the freeway and arterial roadways in the region preferred.
