About The Position

This job classification has been designated as a safety sensitive job classification in accordance with the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana and Patient Protection Act, 63 O.S., § 427.1 et seq., (OSCN 2019), effective August 29, 2019. This means employees in this job classification can be subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination if they test positive for marijuana components or metabolites, even if they possess a medical marijuana license. ESTIMATED START - FEBRUARY 1

Requirements

  • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering, Traffic Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of basic computer operations including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) required.
  • Basic understanding of mathematics required; coursework or interest in applied mathematics, statistics, or transportation engineering principles is preferred but not required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively interact with internal staff, citizens, and vendors.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and exercise sound judgement.
  • Ability to quickly assess traffic situations and make timely, effective decisions under pressure.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Must maintain regular, predictable, and punctual attendance.
  • Demonstrated willingness to learn and apply new technologies and procedures in a dynamic traffic operations environment
  • Ability to pass a background investigation, physical examination, hearing test, and drug screening.
  • Must be able to tolerate moderate noise levels from alarms, typing, and radio communications.
  • Must be able to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to sit or stand at a traffic operations console for extended periods while monitoring systems.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of sophomore-level coursework or higher is preferred but not required.
  • Coursework or prior experience in transportation systems, traffic operations, or Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) is preferred but not required.
  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam preferred but not required.
  • Familiarity with traffic operations software (e.g., Synchro, GIS platforms, or CCTV/ITS systems) is preferred but not required.
  • Flexibility to adjust work hours to support special events, traffic studies, or emergencies is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in structured training in Traffic Management Center (TMC) operations including Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and Advanced Traffic Management Software (ATMS).
  • Learn to interpret traffic data and apply City procedures for monitoring, communication, and response coordination.
  • Engage in ongoing training related to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), system operations, and equipment usage.
  • Monitor real-time traffic conditions using Integrated Traffic Operations Consoles ( iTOCs) and ATMS platforms.
  • Assist in coordinating responses to traffic incidents, lane closures, congestion, and special events under the direction of TMC supervisor.
  • Operate and adjust traffic signal timing and ITS field devices as instructed to support safe and efficient traffic flow.
  • Contribute to traveler information updates, including reviewing external data sources (e.g., Waze, ODOT alerts) and preparing or verifying Arterial Dynamic Message Sign (ADMS) content under supervision.
  • Assist with operational planning, event preparation, documentation, and reporting of TMC activities.
  • Demonstrate the ability to learn and master the operation and maintenance of complex traffic management and modeling software within a reasonable training period.
  • Perform related duties as assigned to support the overall effectiveness of the TMC.
