Requirements

  • Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in civil, electrical, sanitary, or environmental engineering work in such areas as construction, surveying, design, transportation, hydraulics, structural analysis, mining, airport construction, materials analysis, soils, drafting, highway design, architecture, traffic maintenance, or planning, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
  • Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class 3 Motor Vehicle Operator's license.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the installation, programming, and secure placement of traffic data collection equipment, including site layout and assembly of system components to support accurate data collection and equipment security.
  • Assists in the installation and reconfiguration of wiring and solar-powered components on permanent traffic data collection systems.
  • Installs and maintains SDR equipment during winter conditions to support the collection of critical ramp traffic data.
  • Maintains and services key components of traffic data equipment to support accurate traffic studies and special project requirements.
  • Assists in operating and maintenance of the traffic data collection program, including diagnostic testing, calibration, and troubleshooting of both permanent and temporary traffic count station equipment and systems.
  • Assist supervisors and external contractors in upgrading traffic data collection stations to telemetry capability, including supporting inspections for remote data retrieval.
  • Drafts proposed traffic study locations and assists in selecting appropriate equipment for each site, considering geographical and environmental conditions.
  • Maintains detailed traffic data records and submitting accurate daily field reports in a timely manner.
  • Uses Road Reporter software to upload and process raw traffic data.
  • Navigates the MS2 database.
  • Locate station coordinates using longitude and latitude.
  • Identify the operational status of stations (fully operational, semi operational, or down).
  • Submits data to TrafInfo and interprets information relevant to permanent traffic monitoring stations.
  • Assists in coordinating field staff for special traffic data collection projects, performing volume, speed, and classification studies.
  • Assists in coordinating and conducting training for traffic data collection staff and external partners on the use of specialized software and field equipment, ensuring adherence to proper methodologies and compliance with MassDOT standards and regulations.
  • Assists other MassDOT departments by providing specification recommendations for installation of traffic data collection stations.
  • Makes field adjustments to ensure project completion while maintaining compliance with MassDOT safety standards and traffic data collection protocols.

Benefits

  • This position is eligible for a five-thousand dollar ($5,000) signing bonus (“Signing Bonus”) if you are newly hired at MassDOT. Current MassDOT employees are not eligible for the Signing Bonus. The Signing Bonus will be paid in two parts: 1) $3,000 (less applicable taxes) included in the employee's first paycheck. 2) $2,000 (less applicable taxes) after the successful completion of the employee’s probationary period.
