About The Position

Performs at a skilled journeyman level in installation, maintenance and repair of water, waste disposal, gas, steam heat, and refrigeration systems. Leads subordinates and maintains responsibility for satisfactory completion of tasks. Work is performed independently and reviewed upon completion for conformity with instructions and established standards.

Requirements

  • The physical stamina required to lift heavy pipes weighing in excess of 25 kilograms.

  • Knowledge of the tools, equipment, and materials common to the plumbing trade.
  • Knowledge of applicable plumbing codes.
  • Knowledge of the mechanical operation of equipment such as pumps, boilers, heaters, and other plumbing components.
  • Skill in the installation, repair, and maintenance of all types of plumbing systems.
  • This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arm's length, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.
  • Graduation from high school or possession of a GED, supplemented by one (1) year of training in the plumbing trade, plus four (4) years progressively responsible experience as a plumber.
  • The successful completion of up to two (2) years of verifiable formal training in the trade (vocational, military, or apprentice school) may be substituted for a like amount of the experience requirement.
  • Possession of a Journeyman Card.
  • Possession of a valid State of Virginia non-commercial driver's license, and any other license as may be required by law.

Responsibilities

  • Performs master level plumbing in repairing existing installations of water, gas, steam, waste disposal, sprinkler systems, and other plumbing installations; installs plumbing in buildings and in new construction.
  • Replaces, cleans, and makes repairs to flush valves and faucets; does lead caulking; wipes and tests lead joints; removes stoppage from sewer lines; cuts, seams and threads pipe; makes pipe frames and railings; makes layouts and sketches of plumbing to be installed; prepares estimates of materials, time and labor necessary to complete jobs.
  • Trains and leads work of subordinates.
  • Inspects sanitary and other plumbing installations for needed repairs; makes preliminary estimates of job costs; draws materials necessary for job accomplishment.
  • Applies skill in the use and care of tools of the plumbing trade.
  • Applies knowledge of plumbing practices in laying out and installing water and other plumbing systems; of laws and regulations regarding sanitary sewer systems and liquefied petroleum and natural gas systems; of hydraulics as it relates to flow rates, pipe sizes and pressures.
  • Performs related tasks as required.
