About The Position

Under the direction of the Park Manager or designee, the Trades Generalist will perform journey-level work in automotive maintenance and repair. This position will aid in the maintenance and repair of state park vehicles, equipment and other assigned trades tasks using the standard tools of the trade. The job duties of this position include, but are not limited to: Perform journey-level motor, small motor and heavy equipment repair. Perform preventative maintenance and repair on vehicles and equipment such as oil changes, brakes, tires, and other components. Diagnose problems; read and interpret plans, diagrams, and specifications. Work independently; understand and carry out instructions. Operate machinery such as UTVs, skid steers, and loaders. Completes daily maintenance procedures for equipment. Maintain adequate levels of supplies, tools, and equipment to accomplish tasks; makes necessary purchases following all Agency guidelines. This position requires use of hand tools, portable power tools, shop equipment, and measuring and testing instruments Responsible for overall coordination and execution of projects, working independently with minimal direct supervision. Supervise lower-level employees when assistance is needed in repairs. Assist in snow and ice control and operates snow removal equipment when needed. This position involves medium to heavy physical labor and working outside in all weather conditions. This position may also involve welding. Communicate effectively with other staff and park patrons in a responsible and courteous manner. Adhere to the agency's Code of Conduct Policy and ensures compliance with all guidelines, policies, and procedures in the performance of daily tasks. Assist in other areas of park operations as needed.

Requirements

  • Four years of full-time experience in a trade under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in skilled trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.
  • When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license that allows the candidate to legally operate a vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
  • Must be qualified and medically cleared to wear a respirator and adhere to safe working practices.
  • Must possess or obtain a valid Class B CDL license that allows the candidate to legally operate commercial vehicles in New York State within the probationary period and maintain it as a term and condition of employment.
  • Must be available to work weekends, holidays, as well as some evenings and overtime as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Welding experience is preferred but not required.
