About The Position

Under the direction of the Park Managers, the Trades Generalist will perform journey-level work in plumbing and skilled and semi-skilled carpentry and electrical tasks in the rehabilitation, construction, and repair of State Park buildings, structures, and infrastructure using normal tools of the trade. The job duties of this position include, but are not limited to: Operate heavy machinery such as skid steers, excavators, backhoes, and loaders while performing daily inspections and maintenance. This includes basic servicing of motor equipment such as troubleshooting, checking and changing fluids, and replacing parts to ensure optimal performance and safety. Oversee the operation and maintenance of the Bear Mountain swimming pool's mechanical room and filtration system, including seasonal startup and shutdown, in-season operation, planned maintenance, emergency repairs, seasonal draining, winterizing, and recharging of the park's water system while also performing repairs on the pool and surrounding deck. Manage the inventory of chemicals, tools, supplies, and equipment needed for various tasks, making necessary purchases in accordance with agency guidelines. Responsible for coordinating and executing park projects independently, with minimal supervision. This includes assigning, supervising, reviewing, training, and evaluating the work of lower-level seasonal and permanent employees to ensure they adhere to established standards. Assist with snow and ice control operations by operating snow removal equipment. This includes using a chainsaw to fell and remove trees as necessary, while being available to help in other areas of park operations as directed. Communicate effectively with other staff and park patrons in a responsible and courteous manner. This position involves written communication including reading and comprehending written material. Rental Housing may be available and can be discussed at the interview.

Requirements

  • Four years of full-time experience in a trade under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in skilled trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.
  • When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
  • Must have the ability to perform medium to heavy physical labor.
  • Must have the ability to operate a chainsaw and must complete OPRHP sawyer training or equivalent within the probationary period and maintain it as a term and condition of employment. This training will be provided by OPRHP.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license that allows the candidate to legally operate a vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
  • Must be qualified and medically cleared to wear a respirator and adhere to safe working practices.
